Hey guys, new here to this forum. Had a question to all the fiberglass boat builders out there.

I'm in the process of building a kayak and had a question about how thick the layup for final part should be.

I'm thinking of running 3 layers of 3.7 oz plain weave throughout, extra along the keel, bow and stern.

Just wanted to get a few opinions on whether this will be enough or not. I don't really have a good feel for this myself.

This is going to be an 17' sea kayak.

Any help would be appreciated

Without knowing the boat or how it is constructed, there is no answer to this question. If it were made out of okoume plywood, like the Glen-L Sea Kayak, fiberglass is not required. If applied, one layer is plenty. Except where it covers the seams, there is no structural importance to the glass. It is meant to protect the surface.
