Do I need another coat of epoxy on my fiberglass?

Postby BlueRidgeBoater » Mon Oct 20, 2014 10:46 am

I just fiberglassed the hull, and was pleased that it was a lot easier to do than I thought it would be. I've got two coats of epoxy on it after the coat used to apply the fiberglass. The Glen-L guides say this is sufficient, but I can still feel a weave pattern when I run my hand over the surface. Should I apply another coat, or is this just something that will sand out?

Start sanding it. If you can sand it smooth without getting down to the weave, then you're good. If you start hitting the weave, then you'll need another coat.

I agree with Jeff. I usually only put two filler coats. Then start sanding.

Matter of fact that is what I'm doing now.

I know I've got to get to the sanding sooner or later, so rather do it now. What grit should I use? (I would think 80, then maybe a 120 chaser, but interested in what others have done).

I actually started with 60 grit.
Epoxy is hard, it doesn't sand down easily.

Good to hear. I used 60 on the seams before applying the fill coats, and it was definitely a lot better than 80, but I thought 60 might be too much for overall sanding. Glad to hear it's not because I know that will make the job go quicker.

Today I used 80 grit until I get a nice uniform grey. I'll clean that up and go to 100 grit. Check your paint system's recommendations. You can go too smooth. You need some tooth, or the paint won't bond as it should.

This is probably a stupid question, but how will I know if I've sanded into the fiberglass? Is it pretty clear when that happens?

Also, I appear to have had a small bubble that, when sanded, took away about a 1/8" to 1/4" spot of glass. I am inclined to put putty on it and moveon, but is there any reason I need to do a fiberglass patch to cover this?

If you see a white fabric look you are into it. What you describe was an air bubble that you sanded through. You can patch over it or just fill it.

I did get into that in a couple of places. I cleaned it up and put another coat of epoxy on. Will probably put another one as well just to be sure I've got it covered well. I'm putting on pretty thin coats.
