Hi all,

I know this should have been covered a million times but...
can i glass over paint and old resin?

PS: “Practice” the old Mirror Miracle is going along very well. (Practice before I dive in to a real boat!). I have sanded back the hull and I'm currently working though the deck. All things going well I should be able to glass in about four weeks!

Paint over glass...yes. But I wouldn't do it the other way around. Best to do it over bare wood. I stripped one carefully using a heat gun, putty knife, and pair of pliers to grab the edge of the fiberglass. Then sanded the rest off with 80 grit.

Thanks Bill,

I have been sanding lately, I found that the white paint sand paper works allot better than any other sort.

I was weary of using a heat gun or paint stripper as I didn’t want to damage the glue in the ply it self. i might get a heat gun and give that a go.

I guess I will keep sanding. Its only the corners in the cockpit to go I should be so lazy!

I will send through some pics once I have started glassing.

Aren't there some chemicals that will soften up the Glass, without ruining the wood?

I read all these posts. I have decided not to glass any part of my boat.
I'm gonna glue pieces together, seal the edges with glue, screw it together and paint it.
I'm still confused on painting.
Sealer first or not?
Epoxy paint seems to be the other users choice.

The heat to remove the fiberglass actually works really well. You just have to be patient and not get too much heat in one area. I only pulled up a few splinters off the old plywood...it is 59 years old now though.

For paint, thud, I would follow whatever the paint mfg calls for over bare wood. Most, if I recall, will call for at least thinning the first coat.

if its marine ply I think its water resistant phenol-formaldehyde glue. If its interior ply I think its urea-formaldehyde glue.
