Is 240 too fine of a grit to use on plywood that is going to be glassed? The reason I ask is I had an area that needed sanding and all I had was 80 and 240. Used the 240 and the area is now smooth as glass.

I would use the 80 to give a "tooth" for bonding.

are you finishing bright, or painting? (I'm just looking at both of your pictures)

80 may be a little rough for brightwork.

I've sanded to 80 and 220. My can't see a lot of difference under glass between the two. But, your sanding must be with the grain :!: Any cross sanding will show :!:

The cloth MUST be saturated with the first coat or it will show.

I don't want to scare you. But, you need to know.

Guys,
I was afraid the 240 would leave the plywood too smooth and wouldn't give me enough bite as Carl said. Checked my sand paper supply again and found a pack of 150 discs. Used the 80 on one half and the 150 on the other. To the eye they look the same (not shining like the 240), but to the touch you can tell a difference.
Bill,
What started all this was I had too much time on my hands yesterday and noticed that I had sanding marks where I hand sanded the radius at the bottom and transom. On the one side that was against the grain. And I didn't even have a spot light and high powered glasses. :P (Sorry Dave I couldn't resist)
Bruce,
You know the answer to your question. :)

For anyone who uses the term "sanding marks" again, I am going to charge them a cup of coffee for I have that term trademarked. But since you are over there and I am over here, just send the $1 and we are settled. :D

But in all honesty, I know what your are talking about with cross marks on radii. I worked out some marks on the radius of the deck strakes this evening.

Dave,
I didn't mean to infringe on your trademark. Give me your address and I will gladly send you $1. Better yet I will buy you a whole pot. With one condition. You have to share. :) I didn't have the problem on the transom because I was with the grain.
