G-14 Dates and Location

Post by Bill Edmundson » Thu Oct 24, 2019 8:48 am

We're scheduling G-14 for Sept. 17-20. At Hales Bar Marina, again. Gould TN.

They are under new management. G-13 we had a few issues with the change. But, there were also some positives. We think there is an option at Chickamauga. But, we talked to a lot of members and most said to give them one more chance at Hales Bar.

Agree, hard to beat floating cabins with boats parked out the front door.

If we move to Chickamauga, a lunch run to Chattanooga would involve locking through coming and going.

I found that Blue Water resort webpage. It is on a short, side lake at mile 504.5, and Chickamauga lock is mile 471.
The webpage makes that place look interesting.

There may be other dining options upriver from the dam.

I believe there is a Mexican restaurant at Island Cove Marina on Harrison Bay. For that matter, it's called "Island Cove Marina and Resort" so there may be some lodging there, also. (I've only been there once, to the boat ramp & store area). Here's a link to their website:

https://www.islandcove.com/island-cove-marina-resort/

Harrison Bay State Park is right across the bay, and was undergoing renovations last time I was there. The new restaurant may be open by now.

A couple of things to know about the lake immediately upriver from the dam: It is a VERY popular area, especially in the summer, and the water can quickly get very choppy. A girlfriend & I used to take our Bayliner Capri up there, and that boat was fine. A flat-bottom, small boat with minimal V could be a very, very different story.

There is also a restaurant further upriver called "Steve's Landing Waterfront Grill" http://www.steveslandingsoddy.com/location/ I haven't been to that particular restaurant, but I've done a lunch cruise up in that general area & thought it was pretty pleasant (fewer boats on the water, etc)

One thing about that part of the river, too, is that the Sequoya Nuke plant is right on the river. The cooling towers are an imposing sight, and I personally am always happy to get away from them.

All that being said, that general area could be a good option to Hales Bar. You wouldn't have to lock through unless you just wanted to go downtown. There are other restaurants in that area accessible from the water. It's definitely not as scenic as the TN River Gorge, however.

If I get up that way this weekend, I'll do a little scouting around.

On an entirely different note...

I did this artwork of a Riva Ariston a while back. I know it's not a Glen-L (neither was the G12 design), but it is a wood boat. If you like it, I can make it into a G14 design. I've been looking for a place to use it.

If not, that's cool. I've got some other ideas....

Perhaps something like this...

By the way, did anyone else have trouble with their t-shirts this year? Mine were labelled XL, but very tight. Dylan couldn't even wear his. I've broken them in, to a degree, but these definitely aren't XLs. My guess is, they were mis-labelled Larges. Slim-fit larges, at that. Just wondering if others had the same issue?

I like it! It could be a barrel back too. Lauren's shirt was small also.

Micheal: I like that design. My shirt was tight for me, but I am able to wear it. I looked at Island Cove Resort. They have two cabins. One 5 bedroom and one 4 bedroom. I didn't see anything else in the way of sleeping areas mentioned.

Dylan and I drove up to Harrison Bay today to see what might be available as far as restaurants accessible from the water.

The restaurant, Dock Side Cafe, has re-opened at Harrison Bay State Park after the renovation of the building. We actually stopped in for a little snack, and were happy to see that the menu has expanded since the last time we were there. It's a small, quiet and casual little restaurant. Unpretentious & peaceful. The food is decent, but Big River Grille or Scotty's it's not. There is plenty of dock space to tie up to, in what it essentially a protected harbor well off the main body of the lake.

Afterward, we drove over to the other side of the bay & took a closer look at Island Cove Marina. There is an Amigo's Mexican restaurant on-site, a small Inn, and what looked to me like a courtesy dock with several uncovered slips. There is also a gas dock.

Here are a few pictures, starting with some references as to location, etc...
