Hey Guys,

Thanks to a stroke of luck, I have managed to find someone who is going to give me a Ford 302 V8 but it is not running. Its been pulled out of a an old ZD Ford Fairlane, for you american boys its an Australian Fairlane. The engine looks ok but the person told me it needs to be rebuilt.

Now being that I have a 302 I can marinise. So of course I'll get the bobtail kit from Glen-l for it. Seeing as I am also rebuilding the motor aswell from the ground up. Can anyone suggest what changes I can make on top of the bob tail kit to make the engine fully suited for marine use.

Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Some of the things to change are Brass freeze plugs,Alternator, starter, air breather to flash suppresser and distributor you may also have to change the bearings to stronger ones as a marine runs at high revs most of the time.

For similar reason consider roller lifters with appropriate camshaft.

not brass coated but brass freeze plugs also will need water cooled headers (exhaust manifold) a good book sold by glen-l is inboard motor installation it has a section on conversation from auto to marine engines

Welcome to the Forum !

Which design are you building ? What are your performance expectations ?

Since your engine isn't running, it might be a good idea to run a compression or leakdown test before tearing it down for inspection.

The following link describes the conversion process :

Here are motivational links to get you into the engine building mood. You'll have to suffer through Chevy rebuilds

If you're ordering parts from Glen-L, you may want to add the book Inboard Motor Installations (by Glen L. Witt and Ken Hankinson) to your order. It provides the information you need to complete your inboard installation.

One thing to consider...Ford engines generally cost more for parts, and the marine parts are a little harder to find.

Unless you just have to have a Ford, you might check on this first.

Sometimes free motors cost more in the long run!!!

In Australia Ford parts are pretty cheap and most ski boats here run ford engines, so marinising shouldnt be a problem, personally I prefer chevy but I was thinking of a 351 cleveland for Riviera for ease of parts etc here in Australia...

Thanks for the warm welcome. I'm building the 23' Raven, to go cruising round the south coast of australia. And want an engine that has the torque and power to handle some of the seas off the coast of australia. But also an engine thats is tough as nails as I have heard the 302's will handle driving thru a wall and keep on going. And going to be using it with a appropriately matched stern drive.

The person who is giving me the engine, told me it was running at the time when they parked it over 10years ago. as they turned it into a parts car for another fairlane the engine parts where never used off of it. But he said seeing as it has not turned over for more than 10years he strongly advised rebuilding it

Yeah here ford parts are really easy to get, chevy parts are the expensive parts to get as everything has to be imported. Cause there are no off the shelf parts for the good ole holden motors, which was my first preference as the Holden 308 is perfect for marine use. Once rebuilt accordingly.

Also I would have prefered using a 351 Windsor as the V8 of choice but Glen-l does not have a complete bobtail kit for it, just manifolds and other bits and piece's where as they have the complete kit for a Ford 302 which solves the problem of sourcing marine specific parts.
