I just got my squirt plans in and I'm really looking forward to building it, but I wanted to build a cheap practice boat first. I am a few coats of epoxy and paint away from enjoying my new Minimax.

I'm taking the 1963 Evinrude Fisherman 5.5 (model 5303) off of my rowing dinghy for this. I've already gotten my drum steering system ready to install. But it will be pointless if I still have to mess with the tiller handle for power control. If I leave it down it will hit me in the back when I turn. If I leave it up, I might not be able to throttle down when I need to. This engine can take controls, but I have no idea what cables to use. I just need to cables, I'm going to manufacture my own brackets and levers because a standard control box would be to big in such a mall boat. Every inch of space counts.

Evinrude's website doesn't go back further than 68. Does anyone have a clue what cables I should order?

ALSO - Does anyone know how you can add an emergency cut off lanyard to an engine that predates safety equipment?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Welcome.

This web site has lots of info on Mini-Max's and I know they have info on hooking up "kill" switches and controls on their forum.....esp on older OMC stuff

Hi
On my Squirt, I diddnt't like the look of the control box that came with the engine. Way too big, like you said. I bought the teleflex control handle, which incorperates a kill switch to run the engine. Mine was easy to connect though, because I had a schematic wiring diagram for that engine. I found that online. I don't know where it connects at the engine... As far as cables go, teleflex again. They have a great selection for any application. I think my 2 were from their "33" series. Like you said, you're going to have to fabricate a throtttle arm of some sort at the engine, and the same for shifting. I highly reccomend the handle that I used, it is a beautiful piece of hardware!!
