What's involved in converting a 460 ford engine to a marine engine? Where would I go to find info and parts to convert it?
It is a 1976 engine, with no smog control pump to deal with.

You'll find some of the parts for your conversion in the Glenwood Inboard Hardware Catalog. Cpperformance carries many Ford parts :

I'm sure the Ford guys will chime in soon. Don't forget to post any info you may pick up along the way !

Thanks Paul, I should have asked you about it at the Gathering. I've got the engine in a truck that is still running. Thinking about junking the truck and didn't know if I should keep the engine for future projects.

I have a 77 f-150 with a 460. I've been looking for a Six to replace the 460.
If you come across a 300 six, get hold of me!

A boat engine is Torque at every turn of the crank.
Contact Summit Racing and see if they have a Cam for your 460 in Marine use.
Your old engine has the right pistons. Be sure to replace the timing chain.
If you have the electronic Ignition stick with it. If not get one from a Wrecking yard.

Plan on running a Full Fresh water cooling.
Your truck engine has had anti-freeze in it forever. Don't change that or some Crud issues will develop.

< boatfix.com> still has water manifolds for the 460.

PS: The one thing I always had trouble with was the Head/Exhaust manifold fit.
Take a good look at your Head/Exhaust fit before you re-install it.

Depending what you want to power and if a rebuild is necessary to freshen up,a small block Chevy will be more than likely cheaper in the long run to buy and use.

I rebuilt a four cyl iron duke GM motor, and it was about twice as much to rebuild as an 8 cyl SBC

I had a similar experience as Pirate did. I had a boat with Twin 140's.
The 140's had Nickel in the Castings which made them worth the effort. Also they came with the Pistons and Cam for Water work.

To get a SBC to do what the 460 will do is trying to make a War Horse out of a Mouse.
For Racing they get 800 Hp out of SBC's. Those are $20,000 engines though.
Stock, with a Marine cam, the 460 Comes to you with Torque in a great maintainable machine.

Weight is the big equalizer. A SBC with manifolds probably still a 100 lbs or more less than the 460.
