Not sure if this is the right section for this question but I was wondering what steering system is best for a TNT build with a 40 HP Evinrude outboard that does NOT have power assist.

Thank you all for your advice.

I like the standard rotary cable steering systems like Teleflex.... you don't need the No-feedback style.

I've used these successfully in two TNTs as well as other boats....I have one with a 75 HP in 16'Sea Ray and one in a smaller outboard right now that work just fine.

Others have used a Rack cable system like from Teleflex cause it's small top to bottom footprint fits behind the dash well, but I'm not sure how much room is needed to the side for the cable to curve aft on those...

I would just recommend this one or equivalent in another brand:

Thank you very much for the information. What cable length did you use for your TNT?

I don't remember....my first one was built back in 1974

The second one,was built different than a normal TNT and steering position would have been different as a result

Like Pirate said, a no feed back (NFB) system is not necessary for a small boat but I did put one on our TNT. I used the SS151 NFB rack system with a 10 foot cable. The cable is a little long but works well. It is a 4.2 turn lock-to-lock system which has a little more mechanical advantage over a 3 turn lock-to-lock system. Here is a couple of pictures showing our current installation. I might try to re-route this through a hole in the motor well (that was my original design) but this is how it stands for now.

I talked to a rep. at Teleflex. Rack systems require more room on either side of the wheel but is only about two inches tall. If your wheel will be mounted on the starboard side then you need about 19 inches to the starboard side of the wheel to allow for the bend of the cable and you need about 9 inches on the port side of the wheel. A rotary system doesn't require much room on either side of the wheel but is about five inches tall. So if you want to put your wheel close to the side of your boat use a rotary system but you need a taller dash.
