I was trolling the site and came upon Bill Edmudson's Tahoe 19 build. I am considering engines for my Monaco and saw his Yanmar turbo diesel. He notes that it has 125 HP (metric). My handi-dandy conversion book says to multiply metric HP by .9863 to equal US horsepower. That would be 123.29 HP. That can't be right. Can anyone tell me the correct conversion for this engine? Thanks.

Your calculations are correct. Metric or DIN Horsepower (PS) Hp divided by 1.01387 = HP

I'm happy with it so far. But, price per hp is high. If you want hole shot it's not your engine. At 2000 rpm the turbo kicks. It goes from 20 to 40 in nothing flat. Typically 5 to 6 hrs. on a weekend uses 5 gallons.

The Yanmar Topic reminded me of my youth in an Marine Engineering firm.
We replaced engines and other parts, but mostly engines.

We had some "Sachs", "Jenbach" " P&H" and some other European Diesels.
All those diesels were good reliable and almost trouble free. (If you took the Humanoid outta the picture)
One of those little Diesel engines came in 10 Hp Increments.
If you wanted 40 Hp, you bought four of them and bolted them all together.
I don't recall any experience with a Morphedite like that but we had several of the 10 Hp Singles in use which worked without problem.
Great engines, we never heard form them after the installation.
This was in the late 50's. The Jap Motorcycles were here, but I never saw a Jap or Chinese Diesel in those days.

The only complaints about Diesel power, I heard from customers during the Year I worked there, were the Noise, Vibration and hard starting in the Cold weather.

I learned that Diesel is the way to go during that year.
somehow in all the years since then, I never had a diesel boat though.

Diesels have come a long long way since then. They are not smokey, noisy, leaky, shakey engines of the past diesels. With the common rail injection from Bosch they run quiter, modern seals stopped the leaks, casting & manufacturing lightened them up.
Nowadays they can compete with a gas engine for HP/weight/size.

Bill,

What model number / HP engine did you put in yours? I'm looking for powering options for a Biscayne 18 stretched to 19.

Thanks,

Rick

Rick

I think it's 4JH3DTE/125 HP with a ZF-45A 1.23:1 8 degree down angle.

The biggest issue with the diesel is you run out of rpm. The 160 hp only turned 3400 rpm. The 125 hp was 300# lighter and turned 3900 rpm. The weight/hp ratio didn't change much. The engine & gear weight is 675#.

Bill,

I'm assuming that 675# for the running gear was at the upper limit for weight and that 300 additional pounds was way out of design limits for the boat.

If you had to do it over again, would you stick with a diesel? Do you feel that your boat is living up to it's potential with the power plant you have?

I'm intrigued by a marine diesel maybe because I have a diesel in my truck or because I like the idea of an oversized engine working at partial potential rather than a smaller engine straining to keep up, but I'm aware that weight and physical size will always be an issue with a diesel. To add to this, my choice of hull is probably not conducive to the weight of a diesel.

No the 300# was not the problem. But, because of the weight difference and rpm difference I could get the same performance from the smaller engine.

The gasolene engines some of the guys are putting in are in the 900# range. It is all a trade off. $/HP diesel is high. I like mine. But, if I was on a lake I might go gas.
