I am looking at a 1995 130 hp Johnson 2 stroke v4 engine model:J130TLEOP on ebay. Current price is 102.50, but I am sure it will go much higher in 9 days. Has no reserve.

Since I know nothing about motors, any comments, things to look for, wise decision? What should be max paid? Thanks for any help.

Bryan

not sure what a good price would be, but is this going to be for your malahini?
130HP sounds waaaay overpowered for that boat.

Yes, but I am modifying the hull with a deeper v from a donzi design. Also will attack transom to full length stringers. Concerned about power needed to get on plane. Really looking for 115 hp. Think that would be better.

Bigger than you need in my opinion. My 90 HP gets my malahini on plane in a snap and I wouldn't think a deeper-V hull would require much more.

There are 40 HP Malahini's that plane just fine. A 30 HP could probably do it with a light load.

The boat hull is very light (compared to fiberglass hulls), and the motor weight has a big affect as to how the hull sits in the water. My 90 HP Mariner is on the top end and if I could I'd trade down to a 65 or 75 HP if I could get a lighter engine. I don't like how low my transom sits at rest.

If I did my calculation right, my Malahini Max HP is 115 according to US coast gard regulations. I've seen a photo of a Malahini with a 115 HP on it, and its just plain overkill to me.

My 2 cents!

Thanks. This engine is a no go then. Will look for a 90 hp. The plans for the donzi type say up to a 135 hp. Of course the is no details for how to build the transom the support such a big motor.
