Is there a tell tale sign that a starter should be replaced over rebuilt? Just curious as a new starter is big $$$, ($100 - $130), and a rebuild kit with engagement gear is just a little less ($60 - $80).
The starter in question is off a 1973 Johnson 85 Hp. The starter doesn't spin the fly wheel fast enough, and kind of chugs, and doesn't always want to go. Having 2 motors I was able to switch out the starter, and everything else worked fine.
About inboard or outboard motors.
