Brand New Suzuki Outboard - No Water from Tell-Tale

Postby mikweber » Thu Dec 31, 2015 4:02 pm

Hi Folks,

After 2 years i am finally getting ready for the splash on Sunday, and have run into some engine problems with my brand new Suzuki DF20A outboard.

Today I started my new outboard for the first time to find that no water was coming out of the tell-tale (pee hole). I read on a forum that it the engine might need to warm up before water would come out, so i ran it for 5 minutes on idle. Almost exactly at 5 minutes an alarm went off, and I shut down the motor immediately - no water had come out at all during the 5 minutes of run.

The engine was in a bucket of water up to the anti-cavitation plate the entire time. When i eventually put this on the boat, the engine will sit with the anti-caviation plate about 1 inch below the bottom of the boat (per the manual).

Any ideas on why no water is coming out? I am also not positive if the alarm was related.

Thanks,
Mike

:D If it's like my ol' outboards-the waterpump is a little above cav plate on shaft.maybe more water in bucket if still no water, maybe running the waterpump impeller dry destroyed the rubber impeller.try using muffs and garden hose.or put on boat and put in water.

Did a bit of research, and it looks like you are right on the depth. It had to be deep enough so that the impeller is submerged in addition to the water inlets.

I opened up the water pump to check the condition of the impeller. it is still whole, but i ripped the gasket in the process - i think the heat caused it to adhere to the stainless base plate. I'll have to purchase a new one, so it looks like I'll have to do a bit of waiting before the squirt gets to see water.

Thanks!

Check for Dirt Daubers mud in the hole. That sounds strange I know. But, it happens.
