I am at a stopping point on my Zip and have some extra time on my hands so I have started tinkering with my 1967 40 HP Evinrude. Personally I think that they are probably the ugliest motors i have ever seen (Sorry Dave but I don't get the George Jetson look :D )

I would like to build it up to look like one of the old "hot rod" style outboards with no cowling. Does anyone have any resources for modifying these old outboards? I have searched the web and can't seem to locate anything.

Any help would be appreciated.

Jake

I am no expert but I think that the two main things that you have to mess with are the carbs and the exaust. Most websites about old motors are more geared towards people restoring to original specs rather than supercharging them, so you might have trouble finding information. Good Luck.

Need a good machine shop. Some of the 2-stroke MX prep shops can handle the work. I would expect to mill the head, clean-up the ports and bias them toward high RPM, and run a dry pipe. (I have fond memories from my teen years, of my neighbors 1150 merc with 6 big, beautiful expansion pipes on it.)

I have to agree, those are some UGLY motors! Just put a big brown paper bag over it! :D

Hi, you will need to get a carb or carbs from a 50 hp of the same year, exhaust tuner of the 50 hp , shave the head or heads 50 thousands and run one step colder plugs, then up your Octane too 93 to prevent Detonation,, Bill.. bumped my 18 Hp Merc up to 25 Hp by a simple carb swap & larger exhaust tuner, ( pipe ) Bill, Goodluck , do some research on your engine and the 50 hp to compare carbs & exhaust..
