mystery motor problem

Post by chugalug » Tue Jun 04, 2019 8:01 pm

 Have 1994 90 hp merc outboard that I got last summer.Ran great last year. When I put it up last fall-checked lower unit and charged and removed batteries. Now this year,I checked everything and launched the boat that the 90 is on.Took a few cranks to start and after went for a 3 mile cruise.Noticed that power trim on shifter was not working(power trim on motor works) When I got back to dock,I turned motor off and tried to restart motor(dead-nothing)Checked wire connections and tightened up a few.No response so I was P O ed and put everything back together and put hood on motor .Tried 1 more time-power trim worked on shifter so tried motor. It fired right up but then the trim on shifter quit again and after turning off motor, motor doesn't restart again.Dead!! guages don't work at all-even with motor running.Everything worked last year.STUMPED

I'm not an outboard expert, but sounds like an electrical issue. I probably would check the neutral switch first. I understand that those fail sometimes. Best of luck hunting down this gremlin!

If you don't already have one, get a repair manual for that motor. It should have an electrical circuit diagram that you can trace out. You may have a bad ground or open circuit. Could be a poor connection in a plug.

Was reading another forum this morning about what another fix was-the main engine wire harness connection under the hood-might be corroded and pins not connecting so will start there. :roll:sure hope I don't have that problem on the 2013 Yamaha 9.9 sitting on "Chug-a-Lug" :D

Boeshield T-9 sprayed on the connector might help keep the moisture and corrosion out now that you have fixed the problem :D
