i am searching for 6061 aluminum angle for mounting my motor to the motor stringers of the Belle Isle. Ken Hankinson just says "husky" aluminum angles. i am thinking i need 1/2" thick with a 3"leg and a 4"leg to handle the weight and torque. anyone know a good supplier of such. I have looked throughout the new england region but can find a supplier

Have any of the welding shops been any help? You can call Brad Winters (Brads Welding) in Peterborough NH ...he is a good guy and might know of a sourse for you. Tell him that you got his name from a plumber in Marietta GA who used to live in Jaffrey/Peterborough...but dont listen to any of his stories cuz he lies like a rug !

Go on ebay , under Buisness and industrial / manufacturing and metalworking / metals and alloys.

You will find plenty of aluminum angle. I used 2 x 2 x 1/4 6061 for a SBC, they use the same for top fuel motors in drag boats. I dont think you need any stronger !

These companies will cut it for you right to size so you dont need to buy a whole stick ( 21')

How big of a piece do you need ? I think I still have some left.

Thanks Steve and Bob-
guess i was just overkill on the thickness of the aluminum angle. If i can go 3/8" i would have a supplier. Maybe also bring the inner stringer in a little with a cheek block of wood before attaching the angle iron would allow 2" legs... Steve you lived in a beautiful part of the state! just out their with the so checking out the foliage and a guy who chucks pumpkins with a trebuchet.

Stop by your local Machine Shop - They probably have some in their scrap bin that they will sell cheap.

thanks for all the help guys!
it is so funny because Ken Hankinson went overboard on many of his specs for the boat and when it came to the part i know little about ie metal fabrication he says use "husky" motor stringers! how thick aluminum is husky

the motor stringers are 26" apart inside dimensions and my 350 mercruiser engine/transmission mounts are 22 1/2" on center so looks like a 3" leg on the angle is needed.
i was looking for 1/2" thick angle but maybe the 3/8" or less is adequate???

would go galvanized steel but think where i cut and drill will be a corrosion problem down the road.

My engine is about 600# with 250 ft-lb torque. I used 1/4" 6061 T6. But, I used triangular bracing. See pictures in customer photos Tahoe 19.

I hope it works!

3 x 3 x 3/8" sticks in my mind, I read the spec on that somewhere. I'll try to look it up again.
I ended up getting my grubby hands on 316 stainless, so I went with that instead of alum.

Here I found it. It was a article by David Gerr. He mentioned a 350 Mercruiser installation. The engine beds assuming they are aluminum angle: thickness = dia. of the bolts
the formula for the beds bolts is: engine wgt (lbs) / 4000 = dia.
or......Not less than 3/8".
So he is saying 3/8" bolts min., and 3/8" aluminum angle min.
for steel angle beds he says thickness = 3/4 bolt dia.

Bill-
your triangular bracing is confidence inspiring. a work of art!
i can see using 1/4" material when you support it like you have.

Ken 3x3x 3/8" sounds good and i think i can get 316 stainless
will try that approach tomorrow

Billy,

If you will be in saltwater, 316 or better yet 316L are first choice. The weight is not that much different for the amount of material you'll be using.

The guys that did the welding charged $40. They normally make basket ball goals.

I think you are going slightly overboard with your angle. A 4x3x3/8L is quite large for this application. When the Angle is bolted to the motor stringer, you are basically creating a angle that is 5" tall x 1-1/2 thick, with a 3" by 3/8 flange. The time you have spent and the time you are going to spend trying to get this outweighs just about any benefit of the larger angle. I would go with the smaller angle that you can readily obtain.
