Well in reality for most of the boats life it will be below 5K but when I want to get out and run it will see a few 6500 rpm runs now and again... 8) 8) 8)

Ya setting the solids while the motor is running is a real mess. I've tried using the little clips on the rockers designed to deflect the oil and all it did was toss the clips all over the place..tried it again with the same results so I tossed the clips...lol...so what I did and worked well, IMHO, was to set them first cold to get them close and then run the motor up to temp shut it down and reset them. Didnt take long and worked pretty good didnt make a mess.

You must be getting old! under 5K? That's when it's just getting good! the skier finally freaked, and dropped the rope, It's loud enough you can't hear the DA complaining, and it drowns out the... er... sirens.

That's the problem with you clam-digger jockeys, always want to go so slow that some turtles are sunning themselves on the bow.

That is a pretty wild cam...I intended to keep my motor under 5000 rpm, so went with a replacement of the 230 hp Duntov cam. I also wanted hydraulic lifters, because setting valve lash in a boat can be very messy. Some of the earlier SBC's pumped a lot of oil to the top end. I used to do an 57 270 hp Corvette for a friend and it would squirt oil out of the rockers 3 feet(all over the cars fenders) had to cover them. There are .clips you can use, though. Since you are goin' for big power and overdrive(??) you will be spinning that prop a lot faster than mine, so it will have to be a 2 blade, more than likely. Hi, Paul....It's NOVA SS, not NOAVASS..........Dwain the Skiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii Kiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiing......

Most of the timethe oil geyser is because someone put solid lifters in, but didn't take the time to correctly restrict the oil going to the top end. Really not a good thing, cooks your lube, creates monster amounts of windage, causes oil foaming, and can starve the engine of oil in the bottom in worst conditions.

Just out of curiosity.... why would you adjust solid lifters with the engine running? That sounds like trying to burn a head up the easy way! They are supposed to be set with the engine off! It's the hydraulics that need to be set running. A good tool is an old valve cover with 3/4" holes drilled above the studs. The clips are OK, but depending on the angle of the engine, it's still going to dump a pint or so from the back edge of the head.

Worked with Chevy Sixes most of my life, 216" and 235" (some Fords)and always set the lash with it running....What solid cam V-8's I had did the same, but I usually set hyd. lifters engine off. Sometimes you have to reset one as it warms up......As for 5000 rpm that is about all you would want for a "street" (for lack of a better word)boat....A hotrod like NOVA SS is doing is different story, because of the prop he will use. 3 blade bronze props are not supposed to go above 5 grand....All the OLD boat motors(inboard) never turned over 3500, untill they started using Hemi's and Caddy's in the early 50's. Even then, they usually stayed around 4500....The new style block 4 and 6's run around 4500... AND DAMN IT I'm not OLD.......The SKIIIII KIIIIING....PTTTTTTTTT......
