Still very early in my build, but I figure it's never too early to start looking for a powerplant for her.

From what I've read, NADA can be really inaccurate with values, especially outboards. So I really don't know what I should be expecting to pay for a used one.
Is this one a good deal? http://atlanta.craigslist.org/nat/boa/2621471575.html
(assuming it checks out... runs well, good compression, shifts ok, etc.)

thanks.

Maybe I missed it, but I didn't see any pricing details.
Seems like you need to go to a local dealer to get the dealer(jacked up) prices.
I'm hoping to find a decent motor from the craigslist/ebay route.

I think it varies a lot by location. Around here boat motors are a little harder to come by. It took me 6 months of craigslist searching a couple times a week but I finally found a nice motor at a decent price. 4 hours away.

If you arent already try http://www.searchtempest.com or http://www.allofcraigs.com they search all of craigslist for the particular item you type in. You might be able to find some other 75 hp outboards all over the country to compare asking prices.

Their inventory fluctuates a lot, but there's usually some decent prices at www.smalloutboards.com They can also be used to comparison shop on craigslist for prices

Yeah, I have checked them out too, and they currently have a really nice yamaha 75. But the 3k price is a little steep for me at the moment. But I guess you're paying for a complete restoration with their motors. Would be nice to have a company that backs their product too, instead of just buying from someone and being "on your own".

ugh... decisions, decisions. :?

It would be worth you walking in to your local boat stores and checking with them. I found my 115 for under 4, it only had 10hours on it. You never know...

After religiously paging through Craig's List for 18 months or so I finally got a 50 HP Tohatsu from a Mercury dealer that he took in on trade for 1K and listed it on Craig's list. after paying $1600 for a serious tuneup, hanging, wiring, and changing out the control cables from the local dealer, I think I have a pretty good power plant. So if you can get something for under $3k you probably have a pretty good deal.
