Hi folks, I recently launched my new 21' fantail (pictures in new launching ) I installed a used Yanmar yse12 , I assumed it would need a right hand prop. My question is this how do I know if the gear box is going in forward or reverse? thier are no markings on the gear box showing forward neutral or reverse.
I could in fact be in reverse while moving forward ?
Do you follow me?

thanks

I have a Yanmar 3QM30....

In the manual,it says under Direction of rotation:
Crankshaft and propeller shaft....Clockwise (viewed from clutch side, during ahead movement)

Assuming (we all know what that means), your transmission and engine turns the same as mine

On thinking more....the crank and propshaft will turn the same direction in forward (which is what was basically stated in the manual) whichever direction your motor turns

I think it is lever forward for forward with a right hand prop. But, most marine gears can be set either way so that you can have counter rotating props with the same equipment.

I'm running a left hand prop. So, mine is set lever back for forward.

If you check the specs on the transmission, they usually have a slightly different ratio in reverse gear than in forward.. I would think that for this reason you'd want to be in the proper gear. Mark the shafts (input or flywheel, and output or prop shaft) and count the turns to figure the ratios.

On the ZF-4a trans. the ratio is the same. I'm not sure on my Yanmar 1GM. I'll try to remember to check this weekend. I hope it won't be in the middle of an oil slick.
