On my Huron Canoe project, I am supposed to bolt the seats, thawarts and yoke to the inner Sheer. There is not a lot of material there to drill a hole and bolt the above mentioned parts. It can be done but after I drill the hole there will only be approx 1/4 inch or less of the stem wood on either side of the bolt. This does not seem very strong. Should I glue on an additional piece to the inner sheer in the location of the seats to make a stronger structure from which to hang the seats? The stem material( Spruce) started out an inch wide and I had to fair it down a little .

I have never built the Huron. These are general ways to do the seats...

1) hang them from the inner gunwales. Typically, they are about 3" below the sheer line. I would hope for at least 3/4" of gunwale to use this approach.

2) screw the to a cleat that is fastened to the inside of the hull at the appropriate height.
