since the Frog tape was mentioned above-
it was designed to repel the water in latex based paint. (might be great with the System 3 waterbase LPU)
better off using the automotive product for our purposes.

this is what i have used to mask off painted surfaces. very consistent adhesive and always leaves a real clean edge.
....also make sure you never lay your roll of tape flat on a table as the adhesive will pick up crud and ruin the tape edges.

My green painters masking tape pulled off really clean last night with no scoring needed.

I am waiting for my bottom paint to harden enough so I can mask off the boot stripe area.

So far, so good.

YMMV but my point is when i am painting and trying to make a buck on the job, i can not risk having a do over. the automotive adhesive resists softening by the solvents used with automotive type paints where other tape may or may not depending on how quickly you remove it. also the quality and flexibility of the backing of the tape lets you do curves without puckering so gives you a better line.

Looks like Iggy had some success with this, but thought I should leave a note with my experience for future readers. I used the Painters Green tape, not the Frog Tape, and the paint bled under. Not a huge deal in my case since I was planning on a gold vinyl pinstripe between anyway, but now instead of being striped over the blue, I am now going to have to stripe over the white, which does change the look I had in mind when it comes around to the transom.

Anyway it didn't bleed under that far but definitely enough that if this was my final finish I'd be sanding and repainting, so thought this may help:

I too used the green automotive tape at the waterline. It worked perfectly. It is expensive, I think about $20 per roll, but it's well worth it. I've used the frog tape before, and it does work well, but not as well as the automotive tape.

To be specific, the tape that I used that I had a problem with was Painters Mate Green.
