Step 1 complete!


I know it may be difficult to see, but if you look really close, you'll see it.... no boat!
That's right, finally got the old boat sold, so now I actually have room to start the build.
Didn't get all I wanted for it (do you ever?) but I think it should still be enough seed money for a complete hull.

Plans and book scheduled to arrive Thursday, so plenty of time to clean and prep the shop.
Should be able to start the form/base next weekend, so plenty more to come...

yeah, yeah, i know, just a glorified jet-ski.

We had a lot of fun with it, but it just wasn't the right fit for us. It was fast and fun, but there was just too many negatives...
- maintenance in that cramped engine compartment was a bitch
- two engines. thought that was a plus when we bought it, only to realize it meant twice the maintenance, and twice as many things to go wrong.
- horribly inefficient. man do those things suck the gas.
- damn jet drives get clogged too easily, and you can't just tilt the engine or stern-drive up to get weeds off
- it was just too small. 14.5' isn't bad, but when 4' of it is taken up by the engine compartment, you're not left with much space.

Right now I'm getting the typical "are you crazy?" response from most people, when they find out I sold it so I can build one.
All I can is say "trust me, you'll see..."

I really like the small jet boats,esp the Sea Raider and (gulp) the stupid Bayliner(did I say that???) runabout....not the Jazz.

but never owned one and heard they were very fuel inefficient.

for small jet boats, i always liked the Boston Whaler Rage and Sugar Sands boats........but i would much rather have a Jet driven Zip these days

Turns out they were all out of mahogany (had 1 piece left), so I went back to my original plan, and am going with white oak.

Now just patiently waiting for my fasteners, epoxy, and transfer paper to arrive.

I'm sure I could, but since this is my first boat (assuming you don't count the canoe I built years ago), I'm taking the "easy" path.
Being a former woodworker, I know how much easier it is to do paint-grade jobs as opposed to finish-grade.
Much, much easier to fix goofs... no one ever sees what's actually under the paint!

Maybe I'll build a a spiffy mahogany runabout for my next project. (don't let the wife hear me say that! )
