After taking some time off to...among other things...work in my RV-10 airplane project

Image

I am now back to working on my Riviera build.

Image

I have all my white oak frames built and just finished the transom build over this past weekend. Some of the transom build reminded of my first composite airplane build...."build and install forward deck at this time"........the plans and instructions left a "little bit" to be figured out but all in all it worked out just fine. A five gallon bucket turned upside down and a cold beer while 'pondering" answered all the questions

On my three airplane builds I have used forum sites like to this to post updates, both for motivation to keep it going and to get constructive comments. I'm always open for ideas. Let em fly, I can handle it!! At this point I'm thinking monthly updates....so I better be getting things done regularly!!!

Next comes cutting the frame floor timbers, get the form build and hang the frames. Also headed to Lexington Saturday to pick up the mahogany motor stringers. My youngest son is moving back home to finish college and is pumped about the build so...Let the fun begin!!

Wow.
Building a boat is impressive, but building a plane? I think that would scare the crap out of me.

Some pretty nice work you've done there.
Why not combine both your skills and build yourself a seaplane! :D (or a pontoon plane, or whatever they're called...)

Nice work!!! You picked the two best things to build. A Glen L boat and a Van's aircraft.

Nice work!

One criticism...get a better C&C...chair and cooler,you'll need 'em!!!

Just don't get too comfy a chair,or it'll be hard to get back out of after pondering!

And I thought I have a lot to do. Criminy - your mind must be going in overdrive.

Nah, building an airplane is not scary........however, test flying it for the first time gives you a bit of increased "pucker factor"

Yes Roberta, as you know, both of the these builds are the tops in their fields.

This old five gallon bucket has done be well over 2.5 airplane builds. It's just uncomfortable enough to get me up off my arse and back to building and not just beer drinking in the shop

Dave, I'm a CPA so my mind is on full tilt 8+ hours a day, working in the shop is my get away. My father was an devout aviation buff but never experienced the thrill of piloting. He was however, my first passenger when I got my license. He did build a cabin cruiser from plans he got from Popular Mechanics in the early 60's.....so, it seems quite natural that it's time for a boat build!!

Oyster, since I am new to this forum.....I'm a bit lost as to what brought about your first loss of words.....just hope I don't have you shaking your head in disbelief for some of the stupid things I do while bending the learning curve in boat building

Nah Vlad, Black Magic is a one off paint scheme...she is now owned by a retired Space Shuttle Commander...now that is a little intimidating to know a guy who has piloted a Space Shuttle is flying an airplane I built in my garage, basement, hangar :o

I forgot, but I like to give myself some level of what is known as a margin of error. 8) There are some folks here that exceed all normal expectations of the pursuit of challenges when taking on these projects and executing them to such a high level of competance that words escape me. When I think I have seen it all such examples of yours rears its head. Heck I don't even subscribe to the notion of getting into a 747 closet and defying the laws of gravity, much less tackle building an airplane. But to do double duty, one of the projects being a boat of such magnitude to deflect from the rigors of building an airplane rewrites all notion of understandibilites[is that a word]? for me. I look foward following your build to completion.

You will love both the boat and airplane...I can tell you first hand. I still have the RV-Grin and the Glen-L Grin after completing my projects. Enjoy the process and education along the way.

OK...now I will bring the topic up again that others have suggested.

How about a Glen-L fly-in gathering. We can meet each other, give rides in our planes and talk about boats...sounds good to me...

My suggestion would be for Chris Atwood to host at Eagle Creek, IN. ( KEYE )

Ted you can actually organize the informal flyin yourself, as was done originally by a couple three folks for the first gathering. There are no sanctioning fees incurred  and for sure no time frame required, just a thread and or some pms,[thats private messages for the wise guys] Personally there seems to be a fair amount of time right now in some early stages of planning for the G6 so the regulars are probably tied up with that.

Those planes look amazing. I'll have to go check out the Van's site to read more. I used to fly back in the 90s, but I'm sure these far exceed anything I flew. The most "demanding" plane I ever flew was a 182 RG. These RVs look aerobatic. It's cool to see that the home built planes have advanced to such designs. I remember those Rutan designed planes (Long-EZ, I think) and there was something else that was popular about 20yrs ago but I can't recall the name.

I've been a forum member for over a year and in the process of building a Malahini. I had to smile when I saw your post about selling your old plane. I knew my brother bought a completed RV-7 so I pinged him and sent the picture. It turns out that he did indeed buy your plane, although it was through some guy in Sacramento. Small world I say.

When I mentioned you are building an RV-10 and a boat, his comment was: "He has way too much time on his hands."

I'll be monitoring your build to ensure quality! If not, I'll have to warn my brother to bail out. ;-)

Welcome to the forum and good luck on both your builds.

Let's hope there is no "bailing" by your brother or me when I float the boat!!
