I have recently started my second boat the Desperado. The pictures attached shows one fine black cherry tree (Prunus serotina) that I cut and delivered to a local sawmill. I picked up the lumber and the frames are being made. I have one section of the tree cut and kiln dried to 1/2" for a veneer that will cover the sides and deck, the veneer will be a 1/4" with bead and cove joints. In the morning I am taking a ride to pick up marine plywood and I already have the bronze fasteners. Raka no blush epoxy just arrived. :D Mark

Now THAT is building a boat. I had a friend that built Kentucky long rifles from scratch to the point he would girdle a walnut tree, let it die and dry on the stump and then harvest the lumber a year later for his stocks.

I applaud anyone that goes to that length

Keep us in touch. This is going to be great to watch and "participate in spirit"

This will be one interesting thread to follow. Please keep us updated. Also, this is the type of thing that a magazine such as "Wooden Boat" could be interested in following. I'm serious. I would love to see your build chronicled in that magazine.

All frame members including gussets and floor timbers are ready for assembly. All pictured members have been given a generous application of RAKA UV resistant non blushing epoxy. The band saw, oscillating spindle sander, and air file were instrumental in the precision cutting and shaping. I also purchased a 1991 Merc. 115 HP in wonderfull condition, I plan to refinish the entire outboard to make her shine like new.

I recently make a 75% bees wax (my own bees) and 25% Naptha lube for the bronze screws, it works great. The frames are coming together and I look forward to building the strongback. I just painted the floor of the recently remodeled garage to be used as the heated assemby shop (NY cold winters). :D

Sarotina is ever evolving, I just dry fit the frames, motor stringers and keel. After lots of attention was paid to leveling the building form the keel is nice and level, time to epoxy all parts in place!

The epoxy has set with level frames, the new sander file was great for fine tuning the joints. The 1991 Merc. 115 HP is almost ready for removal from the old hull. The transom with framing should be in order soon........... Mark

ooh... there's a tool I don't have. I might have to come up with an excuse to get one of those. :)
What brand/model is that sander?

I have that sander, and it is a great tool to have. The only complaint that I have on it is the wear pad under the flat sides is very soft, and wears away in a short time. Might need to epoxy an aluminum or stainless pad in place if you can find or make something. I thought of using delrin, but it would probably melt fairly quickly under heavy use. The wear of the pads leaves "crumbs" stuck to the idler wheel on the end, ehich can cause problems. Otherwise, its a workhorse. It's been great for "carving" guitar necks, as well as any number of other projects. Here is a link to it:

I need some advice on transom, transom framing, and transom framing notch angles. I am not sure if I cut angles before or after transom assembly/mounting. Let me know what method and tools you used to accomodate this. thanks, Mark

On the Malahini I just screwed (temporarily) the hardwood to the plywood and with a sacrificial piece screwed to the assembly (as a straight edge) I ran it through my table saw with the blade tilted 12-13 degrees. You could do the same thing with a circular saw as well.

Is this what you were asking?
