I still have my print out on the wall of the shop. This one should be made a "sticky" for the forum.

Have fun, Bill

Hey Bill, this was great, thanks. I just saw it since it came back up to the top here.

Perfect timing too, since the Sea Knight is in winter storage (first time since I started building it---won't do it again either since I can't see it and think about what I want to work on when it warms up...or just stand there and look at it).

I have really gotten stir-crazy this winter without the boat in the garage, and have also bought plans for the Malahini which I am going to build for my son. I have a bunch of 15 minutes-es that I am now going to use getting things ready for starting on the frames for the new boat. That will solve my stir craziness AND give me a start on the boat before the snow is gone and I can get the Sea Knight back!

Great ideas there!

See ya...
Bob

Bill,
I have one for your list: Read back over instructions, go back over the plans and most important reread your own notes.

I have found that about half way through your build, you don't even need the plans or instructions other than an occasional reference on a dimension or two...I've looked at them so much by that time, that everything is kinda stuck in my head.

Anyone else notice this happening??

Heck it takes me 15 minutes to my eyes open and get my knees bending and get a cup of coffee with a splash of sugar in it before I even dare to touch a power tool not withstanding the tool of necessity the four inche angle grinder.

Wow, that's a great list, and can be applied to so many other projects with little change! Thanks for bumping this.

Half way through a build there are no instructions. Because, then you're into the custom stuff that you're the only one that can do it!

I'm at this point in the Bartender! So, I thought I'd bring it to the top.

Bill

Over in Sailboats "Minuet - "Sweet Pea" Robert (RAZOPP) and others were complaining about time to work on their boats. Dale (Smith Brother) suggested that boat building is "7000 20 minute" task. Robert said he'd have to settle for 15 minutes at a time.

I haven't turned my hull, yet. But, I put a list together. My guess is that for every 3, 15 minute task, you save an hour on your "big" work day. Something will interupt you for the other 15 minutes.

What ever you do, Don't do "Honey Do's" with your 15 minutes. They will just come up with another. They want the time, not the activity.

I tried for things that aren't too dirty or messy.

I'm sure you will add to this list!

Things To-Do with 15 Minutes

1. Mark a pattern on a frame.
2. Make cardboard gusset patterns. (12 pack boxes work great)
3. Dry fit the next glue job.
4. Dry set frames on set-up/motor stringers.
5. Use molding strips to check the symmetry of curvature, frame to frame.
6. Take some pictures for John. John likes pictures!
7. Mark screw locations.
8. Drill screw pilot holes.
9. Drill screw counter-sinks.
10. Trim excess overhangs.
11. Sweep.
12. Pick up used sandpaper.
13. Cut up bulk sandpaper.
14. Plane that piece that’s been bothering you.
15. Make a list of things to pick up before the next work session, Put it in your car.
16. Make building log entries.
17. Look for and mark high and low points for fairing.
18. Get on the computer and order materials.
19. Pick up scraps in shop.
20. Pull staples.
21. Wet wood down for final sanding.
22. Do some masking for this weekend’s painting.
23. Finish that piece that you stopped on, to do a Honey Do.
24. Layout tomorrow’s work and tools.
25. Get out the C&C (Chair and Cooler), sit down, and drink a Beer. Enjoy your work and think through your next move.

Have fun, Bill
