it is becoming evident to me that one of the most important tools we as fellow boatbuilding enthusiasts might have is the digital camera.

So, what kind would you recommend ?

Steve

(You know I wouldnt even be asking if it wasnt for the Nova Scotia Harley trip in a couple of days !!!)

Well there are LOTS and LOTS to choose from. Not a hard thing to buy as there are so many stores selling them and so many of them have knowledgeable people to help you decide.

I know you have just a short period of time before your trip, so I would determine the amount of money I wanted to spend and ask for help in a retail store. You could go to a book store and check out a copy of Consumers Report that tested Camera's and that may be of help. Personally I wanted one that was SIMPLE, like me, hehehe and three years ago wanted to spend less than $300.00 on same so I went to a box store and within a very few minutes owned a HP 5.3 MP that is simple and does a great job. They have come down a lot in price too since my purchase and the quality is very good. I purchased a small battery charger and have not looked back since.

There is a lot to look at, but no need to make it a difficult process.

I wish you well.

Dale :)

I am like Dale in that I am a fan of the basic camera. I bought a $299 special at the local Circuit City. It is a Canon, 5.0 mp camera. I could not be happier with it. However, here are 2 things I have learned:

1. The mrs. is not happy with an epoxy smear on the view finder.
2. On a recent trip I got something in the lens (dust presumably from Mt. Vesivius) that caused the lens to not open properly. Took it to a certified Canon repair place and fixed free under the warranty within a week.

Regardless, both of my problems were self inflicted. Everyone in my family has used a similar model Canon for the past 5 years with no problem. There included software is also pretty nice.

I bought a Nikon D50 DSLR to replace the older Film SLR we had. It's a great camera but it also cost $1000.00 by the time I added in what I wanted. For the boat I may get a less expensive model that I could almost afford to lose overboard, should that happen.... on the other hand, the Nikon does such great work that it will most likely make it onboard anyway.

Santa Claus gave me a Nikon Coolpix 2000. I like it.
The biggest thing I notice about sending/exchanging pics via the internet/email is this:
Dont take the really big pics with the camera. A large pic and you can only send a couple in the email,or you have a large download to deal with.
I always take, and recommend taking, small size pics that download easily.

Kens, you're so right about that.. but you guys can also take as big a shot as you like (so that your archived shot is a high quality) and then use this free (really free) program to reduce the shots for email and web viewing.
http://www.stormdance.net/software/photorazor/software%20overview.htm

I've used it for about a year now and you can set the size you want and the quality of the reduced shot.

I've got a Kodak P850 5 MP. Looks & shoots like a SLR. Lots of wistles and bells. I love it. :) When you open your pictures in windows explorer, you can go to edit and size them down. Then you do a, save as, and modify the name. You then have a more manageable file size. If someone wants to get a better look then you can send the base file.

:D Greetings, all!

I've been using an Olympus brio D-230 2.0 MP, but just switched to a Kodak Z740 5 MP. Wow! What a difference!

If you want a great camera at a decent price, check out the Kodak Z740s on eBay. You can pick one up for under $200. Not bad!

I'm really going to give the new digi-cam a work out on July 28-30 - 15th annual antique wood boat and car show at Minocqua, WI. Hope to take lots of neat pics. I'll post some of the best when I get back. Anyone else going to it?

Charlie had talked about the show and I am considering making the trip. How many wood boats do they expect, and have you been there before.
Comments?

Thanks Rich,

Dale :)

I have and use a number of digital cameras. I have a Kodak, but have more or less standardized with Sony's over the past few years. I have three of them, and love them. Latest is a DSC V3 I bought for aerial photography from a helium balloon. I use a Cybershot 93 with an underwater housing for underwater photography (duh), and I also have an old DSC F 707 thats one of my favorite cameras of all time.

Got a run of Nikons, Canons, etc. in 35 mm SLR, but never seem to even go looking for them anymore.

Beware the marketspeak crap about megapixel numbers. They are playing lots of games with them. From what I have seen, you can slide a bit on this weeks new bigger mp number claim if you go for some quality optics. Zeiss are good. Nikon, Canon, but you need to get that image through the optics before you decide how many little squares you cut it up into.
