Hi to all. And a Merry Christmas.
Well after a long wet summer at our lake home ineasteran Ohio, I am back in the city. I have been working on my Zip build again.Goal is to get the plywood on and fiberglassed before April 1st.
I have just finished up installing the transom plywood. I have all of the plywood cut and fitted to the boat.
The question that I have is this
The bottom battens that run from the transom forward just past the last frame. when they get past that frame they are cut off at an angle.
Is this angle determined by the way the plywood lays from the keel to the chine and do they get sanded at all? To fit the curve of the plywood.
Thanks Jeff

Look on page 11 of my topic "Roberta's Zip". You can see the battens are angle cut and I have also faired them down to fit the planking better and be a little more flexible to conform with the bottom planks.

Thanks I will look. Can you tell me how far forward of the front frame does the transition from lap to but joint starts. where bottom and sides meet.
Jeff.

My picyures are in my Topic "Roberta's Zip". The transition form butt to lap is between frames 4 and 5 1/2.

Here is a link to the transition on the stem and the keel and the one on the chine. The place you locate these transitions is where the fairing of the edge of the plywood becoumes too severe for the lap joint and a butt joint is more suitable. There still may be some beveling on the butt joint, but not as much until there is no beveling needed at all.

Thanks Reberta. That was what I was looking for.
I have now got the transom covered with mahogany plywood and trimmed to fit. Rear side planking fitted to the shear and chine both sides. Front planking fitted to the shear chine and stem. Now on to making that joint from butt to lap. Also need to get botton battens fitted and cut off.
