Hi Folks

I received a gift from a family friend just before he passed away. I had always heard about the sailboat my father build in my grandparent's basement, but had never seen anything to do with it. My father (also passed away) had just shrugged off my questions with, ".....it was gone a long time ago." I seem to remember he had said the design was a Lake Superior Dinghy - or something similar.

The gift was a couple of pictures of the build, and of the boat in the water. These pictures are from 1935 in Toronto.

I feel most fortunate Harry Hunter took the time to locate me, to get these photos into my hands.

This boat building thing at home, goes along way back!

Cheers

Mark C

Thats just down right cool and priceless for sure! Thanks for sharing. I know that many here take for granted a lot of those boxes of kodak moments stored in a big pile and stuck somewhere in the belly of some forgotten corner of the house or closet. But boy are they a lot of fun to look at from time to time. The sad thing though in this digital world, unless people go the extra mile to print many of them out on conventional formated print quality backing, the shots are temporary, especially with the age of evolving electronic gizmos. I know I have a complete section of Floppy discs that have been rendered almost useless except that I have saved a computer with the feature to play them. But overtime even those loose their content because of the way they are stored in close relationship to other new fangled equipment, or thats the reason that a garu in this field told me when I opened up some and they were blank. So get the priceless ones printed properly folks.

Right on Oyster;

I had all my records of purchases for my Titan build on a floppy. Lost it all and have no idea how :x .
Fortunately I remembered the bottom line, so I still have a dollar figure. Now I'm putting everything on paper to be safe.

Very cool pictures Mark--thanks for sharing. I've been posting history photos articles on our blog and am finding that it's a really good way to discover lots of neat stuff about our history. Treasure those...

We have another surprise. Wyle Ashley, who came to G4 with us, found a picture of the 19' Two Plus that he and his dad built in the '50s. The picture is dated Sept. 6, 1959. He's looking for more pictures. We'll scan them and post them as soon as we can. I'll send them to John & Gayle also to post in the photo section.

Hi Folks

I'm glad you enjoyed the pictures. I appreciate the effort these people took to get these pictures to me. My brother, sister and my mother had never seen these before either, so now we all have copies to enjoy and for safekeeping.

There is one more to add.....Same place at the mouth of the Humber on the shore of Lake Ontario. For those who know the Toronto waterfront the building in the background is the original Place Pier.

The fellow in the middle - my father - Jack Chadwick
The fellow on the right with the pipe - my grandfather - Harry Chadwick.

My grandfather was a "classically" trained cabinet maker, trained in England before he emigrated to Canada. The tools used in the basement were his. My father was an only child. I have the summary collection of all of their tools.

I used them to build my boats. I used his jointer plane on a cabinet I'm building for my daughter, just the other day. Hands much more experience that mine have held them over the years, and I strive to learn from them.

We are all still connected.

Cheers

Mark C

Hi Mark.

Great to hear from you!!!

Thanks for posting the history... I only have vague memories of building a sailboat with my dad at the age of 5. (I was 5, not him).

I wish we had pictures of that.

(But I still have ... and sail ... the boat ... a Mirror Class Dinghy ... "the Wallopin' Window Blind" ... for those who know my Dad, don't mention it to him, or he'll sing you the whole song)

Hi Bruce

The first boat I saw built at home was a Mirror! Also it was the first boat I ever sailed in! It was built by a friend of my parents when I was around 12. They lived in Rexdale with no garage. The fellow (passed on now) bought an army surplus tent, and built it in the back yard, in the tent.

It was a blue hull with a bright cockpit and of course the classic orange sails.

Cheers
