I'm trying to peg down the cost of the lumber for the Chinook. It calls for " 1" nom. (four-quarter) x 60 bd. ft. with some widths to 7 ". Just to make sure that would call for 3/4" lumber right?

So if I ordered 90 linear ft. of 1x8 would that be enough? Material list leaves a lot to be desired.

I would never attempt to buy from any list even if someone has provided their absolute detailed to the very splinter of wood of what they have used themselves. Most of the lists thats provided is nothing more than probably the absolute minimum which also changes with every builder too, depending on how experienced they are in laying out wood parts on rough cut lumber. Grain patterns change too, causing builders to either recut or cut around some grain patterns for a preferred part. For me if I order in lumber I like to have more than enough for a margin or error and also that in most cases if I pay shipping. So if I have to go back and order more, the cost increases for additional orders too over and above the raw materials which normally has a minimum anyway.

I bought my mahogany from craigslist. I bought it 8/4 random random and cut the lumber to meet my needs. I didn't use the materials list at all. I have enough left to build a Squirt.

linear feet is differant than board feet a board foot is 12 by 12 or one square foot four quarters thick so 90 linearer feet may not be enough you need to try and order in board feet and yes four quarter is usually three quarters thick if it is already s4s

I found a decent source for marine plywood (hydro tek) in Utah that is close enough to drive to. Now I'm struggling to find a source for the lumber. McBeath out of Salt Lake City has Sitka Spruce, Douglas Fir, Mahogany, and White Oak but at $230 for 25 bd ft of 4/4 lumber I'm going to have twice as much in lumber as I will in plywood. Did not expect that.

Your prices for 4/4 seem awfully high. I would think around 5.50 max for good mahogany, 3 to 4 for white oak, 3 for douglas fir ( don't plan on using douglas fir for anything other than straight runs...it's a bi... to laminate and bend, splinters terrible ) Not sure on sitka since it's rarely available around here.

On average honduras mahogany is running from 9 bucks to 12, depending on the quality. It takes some training and knowledge to pick out the genuine stuff. Sapele and Khyaha is about five bucks tops these days. African mahogany is about the same on the high end even though most folks cannot recognize the difference from the genuine stuff.

I stopped at a lumber yard and checked out the douglas fir they stock. Looks like if I go through the whole lot I can find 16' 2x6 boards without any knots. About 1 in 20.

Ok. I think I got the list whittled down sufficiently to get a material list for the lumber.

http://www.glen-l.com/designs/hankinson/chinook-pw-bom.html

1- 21'+ 8/4
9-18' 8/4
60 bd' ft' 4/4 random/random

At least it will be enough to get started.
