Hi y'all,

Just moved to New Orleans, LA to go back to school. Unfortunately that means a career change away from working on bigger wooden boats (tall ships, mostly in the Chesapeake Bay and Great Lakes). I've never built a boat, or done much carpentry besides bungs or painting, but it sounds like this is something I can do in the driveway of my rental apartment, so I'll give it a shot.

Of course, I'm living on a grad student's income, and working on someone else's boat never paid a whole lot, so it'll all be on a shoestring, but that should add to the fun and satisfaction when I do get my first project put together.

Welcome. There are lot of cool guys and gals down in your area that will gladly provide some "free" advise.

You will need to poke your head up near the Chattanooga area in Sept for the annual Gathering. You will meet a lot of great folks and see a lot of different type of builds

Few things in the world measure up to the thrill and satisfaction of boating in a boat that you built.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I've just ordered plans from Stevenson Projects for their Super Skipjack. It looks like the lines are a little different from the skipjacks I saw in the Chesapeake, but exactly the right ethic for a skipjack (built in your backyard out of whatever materials you can get your hands on... though I don't think I'll be using an old telephone pole for the mast).

We'll see how it goes once I get started. I'll be sure to post progress on the project.
