Fellow boatbuilder & pilot, Chris Attwood, from Avon, IN, and his co-pilot James spent some time on my boat during a recent trip to Florida. The boat - a few thousand, a day on the water with friends, followed by beer and burgers at Grease - priceless!

This is the great thing about the forum, I built both a boat and friendships.

Love the video and the boat! That Evinrude sure did look good back there too. I notice you have Tom Drake's boat as inspiration in your build photos. He told me that he used Don Witherspoon's Zip as his example. Notice any similarities in his paint scheme and my Malahini below?

Posting that is cruel and unusual punishment for those of us that have not finished our ZIP yet -

BUT INSPIRATIONAL! WELL DONE!

Jeff,

Beautiful boat. I had seen you on the forum but didn't realize it was a Zip. I hadn't heard that Witherspoon was Tom's inspiration but as soon as I saw the paint scheme I could tell. It looks like you have a similar bow light as I do. I have had trouble keeping a flag staff in, due to how shallow the socket is. Any tips?

gdcarpenter,

It works both ways - your site is an inspirition to me. I'm thinking of selling my Zip so I can build something else. I really miss the smell of the sawdust, the pain of spinters, and the joy of trying to unepoxy something.

It is actually a Malahini. Don built a Zip first, then started the Malahini. He was diagnosed with cancer in Dec, 2006 and succumbed in Feb 2007. It was 1/2 finished and I bought it from Don Jr and completed it last year.

I wrapped my burgee flag staff with some duct tape and it stays in the hole...at least up to 37MPH. At 37MPH, it ripped out and whizzed by my wife's head in the back seat
