Got the old Merc fired up and running on the boat - sweet smell of success.

Sounds great, hope you had water running to it before the crank

Managed to get the starter to do it's job with a new set of brushes. As for water supply to the engine I pieced together some old fittings to be able to connect the water hose to the engine flush port. Good news it's a great water supply, bad news is the engine never gets a chance to warm up. Hopefully engine will stay in 'shop' until boat is ready, seems wife already has claimed the spot the engine used to occupy in our home.

Now to try and figure out why the tach is not working, connected to stator output but have a sneaking feeling that stator may be cooked. Slowly starting to look more and more like a real boat!

Try switching the tach wire to the other yellow stator wire. Sometimes it seems to make a difference.
