I am struggling between deciding to build the Bo Jest or the Rebel. The hulls are a bit different and the main diffference I can tell is the speed. For those of you who have built the Bo Jest, what is the realistic speed of the extended (about 20 feet) vessel powered by a 9.9HP outboard? Any information would be greatly appreciated. I know the boat is listed to go between 5-8 knots, but that is the 17' version. I would feel more comfortable hearing from someone who has experience with the actual extended boat. Thanks so much!
Jerry

Hull speed is the square root of the length of waterline times 1.5 for MPH or 1.35 for knots.

Thank you Bill. I will try to figure out what the waterline length is. Also, does the HP of the engine matter at all? How about the weight of the boat. I guess I'm looking for someone who has real experience with one of these vessels. thanks for the info!

ok I worked up what the formula comes out to it is between 5 and 5.3 with a waterline of 17 - 18. That sure seems a bit slow from what I have read the boat is realistically capable of.

From his blog: "The KnotSoFast was constructed by Tom Smitherman, to travel the rivers and Intracoastal Waterway in the Southeast. She is a Glen-L "Bo Jest" designed 20' displacement hull mini-cruiser with a top speed of about 7.5 mph."

Tom is on here...I think his screen name is tsmitherman...he has a 9.9 on his...

You didn't mention the type of 9.9. For a boat this size I would recommend a Hi-Thrust model. It will give the peformance of a 25 on a non planeing boat.

I have yet to purchase the powerplant. It seems as tho the hull simply cannot exceed 7 or so knots from what I have been reading. I may just go with the rebel at this point. I do wonder why the plans are twice as expensive... lol
