Finally found my lumber. I bought 300 bd ft for $.60 per bd ft. He let me sort through the wood at my own leisure. Very happy right now with what I got.

Very good It is Douglas and not lodge pole.

The fir is OK for frames and straight timbers/frames, but IMO and from my experience is absolutely terrible for battens. It doesn't bend well, doesn't fair at all and splits and splinters when you try to dress it or even belt sand it when fairing.

It's douglas fir for sure. He sells it for flooring but is letting me go through the rough cut stuff before it gets milled.

Not sure I have very many other options. Mahogany and white oak is 7$ per board foot.

Brad; I would suggest that any battens you have to bend much that you laminate them up in 1/4" layers. This will definately help. For fairing you're better off with a belt sander than a plane.
