All,
I've been a lurker here long enough. After months of reading posts and and researching I've finally begun a Tubby Tug. I've emailed a couple of you off the board for suggestions and everyone has been great. I'll try to update this as I go and am looking forward to the finished project. Many thanks to Kevin's site and all of the others who have built one before. I've probably saved pictures of just about every Tubby Tug I could find and my wife is already sick of me talking about it. I find myself constantly daydreaming of working on it.

Here's the first piece and the little one who will captain it someday.

This being a Texan Tubby I'm guessing it must be about 12ft long right?

Yer darn tootn' it'll be a 12 footer!

A little more progress made. Encapsulated the bottom of the hull in epoxy and cut out a few more parts and mocked them up. My little girl's bedroom is directly above the garage and my tools keep her up so it's slow going until the weekend.

I've cut the sides and used a butt joint to glue them up. I've been looking at the profile of the tubby tug and the aft portion of the side is bothering me. The profile pictures and plans of the tug make it appear as though the transom is angled out. The way the sides look glued up it looks like it will angle in. Is this just an optical illusion? I've laid the plans over the top of my sides at least 5 times and they match the plans.

Gene,
The transom does angle out.

Can you (or anyone else) tell if I've already messed up from the pictures I've attached? -Gene

Gene,
You are fine, you just have the sides backwards in this picture. :D
Image
The one on the left is your starboard side and the one on the right is your port side. The instructions give the angle for the transom, 13 or 15 degrees. I can't remember which. I cut the angel on the bottom of the blocking for the transom and when it was attached to the bottom it held the transom at the correct angle. Then the rear of the sides match up to the transom.

Yes! You are absolutely correct. Crisis averted. I had it in my head that the part of the sides with the largest arch went up and the straightest edge was the part that was stitched to the bottom. In fact, it's the other way around. You telling me I had them flip-flopped solved that problem. I can't tell you how many times I unrolled the plans over the sides and kept checking; if I had just paid attention to where the holes were for the stitches it would have also shown that I had them flip-flopped (I haven't drilled the stitch holes yet).

This forum really is great. Just getting started and already one problem solved. Thanks!

Gene,
There is one thing I would do different if I ever build another TT. I would fillet and tape the bulkheads, transom and seats before I apply my sides. It would be alot easier to do that now, instead of reaching over the sides to do it later. Just a thought. :D

Chip,
Thanks! I think I'll do that. I want to make some other modifications before I put the sides on anyway.
