Hey leave me out of volunteerism. I have my own fleet in the building and needs attention and, yet, another one coming home this weekend.

I need room in the shop and Midnight is headed down to the slip next week to be put on the lift for the summer.

Dave. I only needed the two youngest recruits to handle the beast and I think that was over kill.

The Pirate must have bought some kind of boat bug with him, because the day he left the TNT developed all these brown bumps.

Thankfully, the only cure I needed was a sharp chisel, some sanding and a coat of epoxy. :D

I was shown the technique to use a dremel tool to cut the plugs flush rather than using a chisel. The dremel tool avoids the possibility of the plug splintering below the deck surface if the chisel cut is not aligned with the grain.

Slower but adds an element of safety to the cut.

But folks have used chisels since the creation of time also.

Which floats your boat!!!!

You are correct Dave in that the cut may follow the grain below deck level.

I was shown how to make the first cut a little high with the chisel to see how the grain runs, then next cut from the direction to avoid just that.

As Chip found out, when chipping a lot of bungs, (no pun intended!!LOL) a chisel goes very fast compared to other methods....not that fast is better, but when you have a whole deck or hull to do.....

The guy that taught me a lot of this stuff teaches traditional boat building in Wilmington N.C and him and his wife refinished and restored wooden boats and brightwork.

He also mentioned an old tool he called a slick....essentially a long heavy chisel that you held at and angle while standing and walked along a teak deck chipping of bungs as you walked!!! Sounded like it would be neat to see

Guys,
The first thing I did was to take my widest chisel and sharpen it. I was able to tell the grain pattern of the bungs from the top of them, I then laid the chisel flat on the deck and gave it two hits with a small tack hammer. I only misjudged one and had it break off below the deck.  It was reglued and cut off today. :D I'm not telling with one it is.
Tonight we starting working on the supports for the cross seats and stearing. It is a 3/4"x2" member that runs from the transom framing and will be attached to each frame. Thanks again Warren. :D
