Ok, ... I'm having a hell of a time try to find "Sitka Spruce" of "Philippine Mahogany" here in the LA basin. I went through the list on the Glen-L site and I might as well be asking for "Unobtainum"!!!

Does anyone know of a place or a suggestible substitute for these?

EDIT: I have a source for "African ($18.00 BF) and Honduran Mahogany ($18.00 BF)" will these be usable substitutes?

African or Honduras mahogany will be fine. I was able to find random random honduras on craigslist for less than $5 bd ft but I had to buy the lot so now I have enough or the Squirt build ,too.

Maybe it will be done by G6 and maybe not.

That price seems way high. We get African for about $5/bf.

Weber Plywood & Lumber in Tustin has dark red philippine mahogany 4/4 rough cut for $3.95/bd ft. To mill it, it's about .25 extra per board foot. I haven't seen it, but we used to buy from them. I know it's out of the LA basin

Dark Red Philippine Mahogany is what I used on the Zip and it is very nice to work with. African is OK but can be heavier and the grain can be very irregular and twisty.

I needed to order my wood sight unseen. I would trust anyone Gayle recommended. I put my faith in LL Johnson in Michigan (Workbench) and they supplied very nice wood also. Sometimes it's just better to have it shipped from a reliable source.

I'd like everyone that responded and a BIG THANK YOU to Gayle!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

At first, ... I found a place in Fontana, ... Petersons lumber and looked at what they had. $5.19 BF for their Philippine Mahogany. They had about 50 boards over 10' and NOT ONE had a straight section over 3'. I looked at the African Mahogany, all 3 pieces, ... same thing and it had cracks all throughout the grain, ... PASS. That was $5.86 BF. Next they had Honduran Mahogany, straight as an arrow for the most part, but at $10.65 BF, ... They can keep it!!! That left me with Gayle's choice, Weber Plywood and lumber. I was trying to not spend $60.00 in gas for what was really a crap shoot, as I NEVER by anything sight unseen here in the LA area as it's such a greed fest out here. They will sell you junk at the drop of a hat and not think twice about it. They don't need repeat customers, ... their are to many suckers out here for them to be bothered with repeat customers, ... but I digress.

Anyhow, ... I went to Weber Plywood and they had the straightest, blem free, straight grained wood I have ever seen. All were straight so I just took the top pieces. First time I didn't go through a stack and picked out the cream, ... it was ALL cream.

I picked up 50 BF all long wide boards, 6 in total, all milled to .750"

A 11.750" x 133.750"
B 10.375" x 122.000"
C 7.750" x 134.000"
D 8.500" x 123.000"
E 7.000" x 121.750"
F 9.375" x 134.500"

I also picked up (1) sheet of .500" x 4' x 8' and (2) sheets of .250" x 4' x 8' DF A/B Marine plywood.

I still need to get the (2) .125" X 4' X 8' plywood for the top deck, ... but I have a little time before I'm at that point.

Yeah, ... I'm pretty stoked, ... for a minute there, ... I was actually contemplated selling of the plans and screw kit if I couldn't get reasonably priced wood. I always keep the books, ...

Look's like I'm off and running now.

Just out of curiosity, ... how many BF of Mahogany did you use on your build. I think I have extras, ...

I think it was about 120 board ft of Red Philippine Mahogany and white oak. I used white oak for the keel and battens. I ordered way more than I needed. and used some in the Super Spartan.

I'm sorry Bill!! I thought you mean the Zip!! Silly me!!! I'm not sure how much I used in the SS. I purchased the frame kit from a friend and used some wood left over from the Zip. My chines are white oak and the battens are red Phil. Mahogany and the coamings and carlings are African Mahogany. I used Okoume Joubert ply on the bottom and sponsons and Meranti on the deck.

Looking forward to watching your SS build.
