Now I'm interested. How did you make a CNC out of a Harbor Freight mill? And what size material will it handle?

Pam,

Ask, ... and you shall receive, ...

Mini Mill CNC Conversion, ... http://www.stirlingsteele.com/millplans.html

Mini Lathe CNC Conversion, ... http://www.stirlingsteele.com/latheplans.html

I made the mill conversion with a Bridgeport, ... then once I had the Mini CNC running, ... I made a NEW CNC Mini Mill kit with the CNC for more precision. Then I made the Mini CNC Lathe conversion with the Mini CNC Mill.

Regards
Bill

Well then we have a problem, ... My cooler has been in the rafters for about 5 years or so. A chair in a shop, ... only at my shop computer.

I'm one of those people that have to much energy. I get about 4 hours of sleep a day, and I am very frigidity, ... I have to keep moving, doing something.

No Moss on my back. I figure I'll make-up all the lost sleep and rest once I keel over! I'm going to be one of those guys who just drops with a tool in hand.

I stayed about an hour after work and made a few more parts. The beveled pieces on the transom and the bow pieces. I figured, ... you only need a 1/2 sheet of .500" plywood and you bought a hole sheet, ... Just make the bow pieces in (2) pieces instead of the (4) they have on the sheet lay-out drawing. Again, I taped the drawing on the wood and used my trusty sharpened 16p nail to mark the bow pieces.

I'm going in to work tomorrow to cut out all the rest of the pieces. It get mighty expensive driving my truck to work these days, ... 200 mile commute in a truck that gets 17 mpg, ... DAILY!

Good thing I have my Geo for the daily driver.

Nice work!! There is a 1/4" underlap on the bow pieces that runs along the the sponsons and butts up to the runner. Are you doing that or is this a design change you are implementing?

Thanks everyone, ...

Right now I am planing stuff down to the .500" that's called for.

Roberta,

No, ... I'm still going to add the .250" marine plywood under the Bow piece as per the plans. The modifications, ... for the most part will be just in the way the boat looks. I think she can do a little better than having the equivalent of the "Bee Hive" hair do, from around the same era if you know what I mean. At least I can bring her into the future without drastically changing it and still keep the same frame work. One thing for sure, ... I don't really care for the way the coaming meets the deck with a hard 90* angle. I know for that junction, ... I want to pre-cut some foam blocks with one of my hot wires setups and then sand a radius from 0" starting at were the cowl, deck and the coaming meet, to around a 2-2.5" radius at the transom and glass the foam in with 2 layers of 10 oz cloth on the bias. There are other areas, but I'm going to see thing once she starts taking shape. 8)

Travis,

Yeah, ... to bad I live so far away from it.

Dave,

What, ... I make those same sounds when I bite into Prime Rib! :D

Oh, ... did someone say I needed wood chips on the floor, ... Well hows that?

I am thinking more about what to say about your shop and I am a loss for words

I cut the Coamings from my #A board, ... the widest and longest one I have. I managed to squeeze both coamings from the same board. It doesn't get any closer than this. The end of one cut, ... was the start of another.

Those'll work!!! That red Philippine mahogany looks soooo nice. To avoid a lot of shipping charges I needed to go with African. It looks real nice too but is a lot heavier. The darker color did blend well with the meranti, though. Keep them pics coming. It will be interesting to see your spin on this boat. I liked the classic lines of the original design, but look forward to seeing your styling.

Thanks Roberta,

Did you see any errors the plans?

If I'm not mistaken, ... on the plans, the drawings for frame (3), ... on the bottom of that section next to that little notch for the drain, ... see where it say's; " Coaming #7" next to the notch for the drain? Doh!

I think they meant to say, ... "Running Chine".

I think that's why Glen-L doesn't sell frame kits. I was thinking about what you said about Glen-L and myself to make frame kits. Frankly, ... their is no money in it. First you have the cost of the wood, Labor, shipping, and I'm sure Glen-L is going to want a piece of the pie, ... How much would you be willing to plunk down on a kit???

I think that only the well off folks would by them. If you have money like that to burn, ... they'll just outright buy a boat, because if their going to build it themselves, ... then why buy a kit? There going to get dirty anyhow, ... so you might as well dive in and cut your own kit.

I could be wrong, ... but on this one, ... I don't think so.

Regards
Bill

The frames kits are very labor intensive with little, if any, profit to be made from the target market. I was lucky enough to have gotten the frame kit for the Super Spartan at G4 from Jimmy 70. He had it for many years but decided not to build it. He's into guitars and mandolins now and maintaining his health. Having the frame kit really made this build a lot easier. Glen L really made some beautiful kits in the day. To bad that just isn't a viable venture anymore.
