The twister went right through our nieghboorhood. The gas station three blocks away is a pile of rubble. I can look down the street to the north and see houses that weren't as lucky as we were. We managed to get out pretty quickly after it hit and start pulling trees and debris from the roads so emergency response crews could get where they were going. That brought us over by Boeing and Spirit (Spirit Aerosystems is the largest part of that complex that used to all be Boeing). Wow. They got hammered. An old WWII era residential area near there was destroyed. I dont know how many are hurt.

Eventualy, the police asked us to clear the damage area due to all the downed power lines. Reluctantly (worked in emergency management all my life) we obeyed.

Came home and switched preparations from tornado to security. Then there was nothing left to do except answer calls from friends and family and sit in the dark. I even managed a couple hours of sleep.

Then, the power came back on. It was about 6hrs in the dark. Instinct tells me to go help, but its still dark and dangerous, and I don't reckon they want a bunch of 'gawkers' there to 'help'. Nothing left to do but go back to fiberglassing my boat.

Interestingly enough, the first coat of epoxy was dry to the touch with no tack in under three hours. I hope its ok to put another one on without sanding. The weave isn't even covered yet.

It's been an interesting night in the midwest.

Crap. I already have a blush and the weave is still very prominent.

I'll need to wash and feather and maybe a light sand to at least get the high parts of the weave. I just don't wont to tear up the fabric.

Glad you are OK Andy!! Good luck with the coating. I would not sand the cloth. Just clean if you feel you need to. Personally I would just re coat if less than 24 hrs since last coat.

Glad you are OK. :D

Scrub it with water, ammonia, and dish soap with a heavy scotch -brite pad

You know what they say about Kansans... When the sirens go off, we don't go to a shelter, we go to the porch.

Actually, this was the first time since I was a kid, that I was actually in the basement bathroom with my family, all the cash and valuables, blakets, water, etc. It was a close call for sure. Thanks for all the happy thoughts.

As for the fiberglass, I tested a small section with alcohol because I just happen to have a large bottle on the work bench. I also found a plastic dish scrubber thing resembling a steel wool pad, but... plastic. I grabbed an old retired t-shirt from my shop rag bin and started working.

I generously flooded the surface with alcohol and scrubbed hard everywhere there was epoxy. I quickly followed with the t-shirt before the alcohol could evaporate. It worked very well. The oily feeling surface was dry and hard.

Then, before reading Roberta's sage advice, I hit it with a random orbit palm sander with a very worn 50grit disc on it. I did not press--just kinda let it scuff itself with gravity. Again, it worked great. I didn't cut up the weave at all. I also feathered all my edges well.

I gave it all another wipe down with an alcohol soaked rag and managed to get one side done today.

I'll do the other side in coming days as time permits and then re-feather and clean as before, because it seemed to have worked well. Then, it's just a matter of filling the weave.

For the record, I get a genuine blush in 2 1/2 hours. My build coats will go on every hour or even less when I start them. Temps are normal, even a bit cool--wierd. Either way, the epoxy is easy to work and hard as a rock after 3 hours.

You must be using very fast stuff. I used the slowest I could get and it took forever to harden up. I needed a t least 8 hrs between coats. Glad it worked out for you. You're the best judge on what you need to do, based on what you used and seeing the actual project. All the best.

I never had good luck timing the application of multiple coats. So I did it the slow way, one at a time. But sometimes the slow way is the fast way if it saves a screw up.

What is strange is that I'm using the slow hardener. It does not get warm while working, nor does it start to gel, but once it starts to harden, it does so very fast!

There are so many different products and we all work in varying environments. It is really hard to say what is the best approach. What worked for me may not always work for someone else. I only try to convey what worked for me. Like I said, only the builder sees directly what is happening and they need to decide what to do. The best thing to do is research the products and be as informed as possible before proceeding.

Well, my tattoo appointment canceled tonight so I got to work on my boat some more! YAAAAY! :D

Never been so happy to be stood up!

Fiber glass is all on. Clean, feather, and build coats are next up.

"*cough...*, choke, *" Free?! How do you think a poor guy like me can afford to build a boat?

Not sure if I've linked this here before, but here ya go. DON'T BUY IT! It's stupid expensive, and you can see the entire book in the preview. I just made it as a way to document my work in an attractive way. This represents about two or three years out of a 9 year career. I'm about to publish vol #2 later this year.

P.S. I got DaVinci's flying machine sketch tattooed on my right arm when I passed my check ride.
