All,

I am about to order the "study plans" for a barrelback 19. I have a Rinker 265 and have always admired the old "woody" boats. My father-in-law passed away suddenly in October and he had a TON (and I mean a TON) of wood working equipment (mostly 2 of everything) so now it is all mine. I was thinking to honor him, I would build one (or 10) of these beauties. My question is this; Do they have reverse? I see all of the boats in the posts are direct drive to the prop-shaft. This seems very simple (I LIKE simple, like my 64 Chevelle).

Thanks in advance for all the help, and encouragement which will follow.

Best regards,

- Patrick

Hi Patrick

Yes most of the inboards have a F-N-R in them.

The exceptions are some of the performance boats like a Crackerbox,Tiny Might, and V-drive boats

Where is the best place to start researching powerplants, drives, steering etc?

I knew nothing about inboard engines and transmissions when I started.

I found the Glen-L book on inboard motor installation to be an invaluable reference.

Yes, Glen-L's book is a great resource on that subject.
You will also find as you get into this, that the Chevy engines parts interchange is extensive.
Also, marine drives interchange is based on the Borg-Warner VelvetDrive bolt pattern. This bolt pattern is considered standard and used by Borg-Warner, VelvetDrive, ZF, Hurth, Twin-Disc, and the european makers as well. F-N-R is standard on all these mentioned here.

The chevy engines from 3.0L 4-cyl, inline-6, 4.3v-6, and all the small v-8's use the same bellhousing.

You can refer to our website's Transmission Page for links to specs and suppliers for ZF, PCM and Velvet Drive Co-axial, Down-Angle and V-Drive transmissions.
We've also included links to suppliers for engines and engine packages.

Hope this helps !
