Ha!

That's my oldest grandson. He and his brother get Sharpie tattoos every time they come over. That's his daddy with him (and with the REAL tattoo).

Amazing work Andy. I was blown away by the knives and now this?! Can't wait to see how you incorporate your talent into the final boat design.

So, I was rotating between projects tonight...

Coat of epoxy on the boat, then a coat of Roofing material on the camper, then disassembly of my boat trailer, then start all over again. Man, I'm tired! Good thing I'm at work tonight, I need the rest.

All went well with the exception of dang cottonwood trees deciding that it was mating season. I guess its nothing sandpaper won't fix.

Skeg and bow eye are next when I get er sanded down. Another coat of epoxy after that and it's time to paint. I'm getting excited!

Ten hours of sanding on epoxy and fiberglass...

By FAR the worst part of this build so far. I really don't want to put more epoxy on it because I don't want ANOTHER ten hours of sanding. Maybe I'll just double or triple up on the primer--it's easier to sand.

Perhaps I should do another epoxy coat and practice my roll a tip technique with a sponge brush... Then I could just hit it with the DA palm sander at 120grit.

Dang I'm sore...

Yes the endless sanding can get to one, it sure got to me. Just have to accept that it will be worth it in the end and that you would reget it later if you did not make the effort now.

Went ahead and put another coat of epoxy on. That's a total of 4 so far. I hope it's enough. Tipping helped a lot, and it looks pretty smooth even before sanding. I'll fashion a skeg and get the hull prepped to receive it and a bow eye after this round of sanding. Then I'll afix the skeg and encapsulate at the same time (with the thicker Poxy Grip), spot sand around those areas, and start painting.

Questions:
1. Should I be drilling my drain holes before paint?
2. Does anyone believe that their Zip has a gross rolling wieght of over 2000lbs going down the road?

The reason I ask is that kansas requires no title or registration on boat trailers of a gross opperating wieght of 2000lbs or less.

I figure my ZIP will come in around the 700 lb. mark, some I've followed have topped out over 800 lb - even with the trialer you should have a 'net' or actual weight under 2,000 lb. The question is do the regs apply to actual weight or the capacity of the trailer?

I bet gdcarpenter is pretty close on the weight. I've never weighed mine but I'd be shocked if its over 1500# combined. I'd drill your drain holes before painting just incase anything doesnt drill perfectly clean. Or skip them all together. I've never wished I had them....yet. My theory is no holes below the waterline means no leaks, its worked so far.

Ya know Chris, I never even considered not having a drain hole. I was planning on two--one on each side of the keel, but every Zip review I ever read indicates a dry ride.

hmmm...

I didn't put drain holes in and now sort of wish I had. The Zip is a dry ride but I manage to get some water in the cockpit when I am washing the boat down. I pull the rear seat out and will find about 1/4" of water at the very rear of the boat. I usually end up getting a sponge back there to dry it out but just pulling a plug would be a lot easier. However, those drain holes would need to be perfectly in line with the bottom to work well. If they are 1/4" high you will have the same issue as I do.

On the other hand, in addition to what Chris said, with no holes you will never have to worry about launching your boat without the drain plugs in, something that happens all the time. Not a good way to start the day!
