I Am planning to install a spray rail midway between the chine and sheer on the bow of my Audeen. This will be about 40 inches in length and run downward from bow to stern on a bit of an angle. Anyone have any thoughts on this? I'm getting very wet if there is a bit of a swell and a breeze. Hopefully it will look a bit better that my illustration.

Bill Edmundson used some sort of a vinyl for his spray rails (saw a post dated 2005). If you read my post Bill, can you tell me what the vinyl was ??

The vinyl rails are made from solid vinyl boards available at the Big Box stores. My rails are right at the chine. The bottom edge is perpendicular to the sides. This deflect the water out and slightly down.

Thanks for the quick reply Bill. I'm going to take a look at that stuff. I've never used it.
Tried steaming some mahogany, with not much luck. What do you think of the positioning of the rails ? Do you think they will work ?

As I said, mine are at the chine and run full length.

They do work. Unless you build a chine flat (reverse on the bottom) I'd put them on almost all wood power boats. Some have even picked up speed from the added lift.

The problem with a full rail on the Audeen is that there is a transition between the two layers of 1/4" ply on the bottom of the boat and the single layer of 1/4" ply on the sides. To simplify the explanation, it is rather like an "overlap" that leaves an extruding beveled edge in place of what would normally be simply a hard chine on the forward half of the boat. (Rather difficult to explain without seeing it). This may even be one of the reasons for the rather large spray. That is why I elected to go with a partial spray rail somewhat above the chine hoping that it would catch the rising water and subdue the spray. Whether it will work remains to be seen.

Yes, in hindsight, it should be emphasized that these boats require a full spray rail.

Thought that I'd post a couple of pictures just in case anyone else is having the same problem. This did trick.
Firstly, using cardboard, I made a template of the curvature of my boat (first 4 feet or so).
I then transferred this curve to a piece of white oak, 1 x 5 x 42 inches. I made the strip 1 1/4" wide.
Fastened to the hull with 4 ea 3/16" screws with locking nuts, backed up by a washer and 1/4 " plywood disk 1 1/2 " in diameter.
I did not use any glue but sealed the joint with Sikaflex 291 (painted the strip first).

Works beautifully in keeping down the spray. Have to shower at home now.

Cheers to all on this great site!! I do love my Audeen:
See a few recent short movies here:

(movies take a wee bit of time to load on the "Dropshot" site.)

Double Eagle has 1/2" bottom with 3/8" sides, with that overlap you refer to.
Put the chine rail against the overlap it should hide the lap.
