I am starting a clinker Whitehall. I lofted all of the forms since the patterns were only for half of them. I'll be using 9mm Okoume ply for the planking and wanted the extra forms since the planks would be stiffer than cedar strips.

The frames are on the building rack and ready for fairing and tomorrow I'll be laminating the stem and transom knee.

The garboard/keel connection will receive fiberglass tape inside and out for extra strength in that high stress area. The garboards and second strakes will probably be glassed for abrasion protection and to add a little stiffness to the hull.

Thwarts, thwart knees, transom, breasthook and all other trim will be honduran mahogany. Target launch date is mid to late June.

Any comments or advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Scott Denning
Huntington, WV

4-3-12 Update: Things haven't been going as fast as I thought, but the starboard garboard is now on, the port garboard will be on tomorrow.

Update: Garboards and broads are on, will be turning the bilge soon.

I have 250 bf of Honduran Mahogany in the basement, but have started to think it might look good with all the brightwork being white oak. I can get white oak locally for a little over a buck a foot.

The boat will be used for long river trips, so it will take some abuse.

Any ideas on the use of white oak instead of mahogany?

Scott

8) the white oak would be heaver than the mahogany and make you draft more and might make the boat top heavy just my thoughts on it

Good points. I might do some calculations to determine just how much weight it would be adding. This boat might get banged around a lot so I was thinking the oak would hold up better.

8) as far as straight the oak would have a higher impact rating but you do run into the normal oak problems of bonding which has been talked to death so I won't go into it

I think I will do the brightwork in Honduran Mahogany and just use a rubrail of white oak, fastened only with screws so it can be replaced easily. I had originally planned on copper rivets to hold the inwale, sheer plank and rubrail together, but will use epoxy for the sheer to inwale joint.

I'll hopefully have it outside tomorrow if it doesn't rain so I can take some good pictures.

9 planks total per side, 6 are done on port, 7 are done on starboard.

With it outside tomorrow I'll be able to do a lot of sanding. The 7th port plank will go on tomorrow evening.

My question now is: Although it won't be sail or power, but only row for power, would a rudder help any? When there is more than one rower, (myself), the 2nd rower will probably be a little uncoordinated.

That is a beautiful, traditional build.

I have been thinking of building a clinker style rowboat, and would love to do that on a modified Glen-L design.

Please keep the pictures coming.
