That's just not right!!! I quit putting in for them myself, besides I've been trying to get out of WY for 8 of the 12 years I've lived here

Congrats on getting drawn, hope you've been scouting :D

Okay, I'll be your huckleberry. What the hell is a Moose Tag? I have to assume it's what you need in addition to a hunting license to bag a Moose.

Yes, it's a license for moose. WY isn't like GA, out here you have to buy an individual license for each critter you want to shoot, you have to apply for permission to take the king's game and you have to tell them exactly where you want to hunt from because the state is divided into about a hundred different hunting zones. It's pretty stupid really and it's changed me from a die hard hunting fool to a competition marksman. I just don't have the patience to fool with all their regulations out here.

God I miss my northeast GA mountains... :(

Last time I hunted in Ontario, Canada - a lifetime ago - there was 'lottery' for moose hunters. Not only did you have to be lucky to get a license, but most licenses were for cow or calf and only the very lucky few got tickets for bulls. It really did help keep the population of meeses going well and strong.

Yup Shiras is it...the baby of the Moose types in the US, but it is a Moose none the less! We all long for the Alaskan giants I am sure, (even the Canadians in NH are larger) but short of paying a kings ransom I will settle for the Shiras! I will hold out as long as I can for a good sized one...I was shaking this morning when I found out. I was the only tag drawn out of 225 applicants (If I am reading the stats correctly).
Steve

My goal now is to take it with a bow, I have a Navy buddy coming to visit from Canada and he is bringing his horses with him. Sounds like I have a packer already!! We can get into some good country in the wilderness with the horses. May not come to fruition, but at the very least I will drop one with bow or 30:06 before my time runs out. My buddy happened to draw a tag last year and he saw 24 Moose in our area, stats say that 89 percent of the persons who draw fill their tag. He is going to act as my guide which will be a great help. I have run into a number of moose while elk hunting so I have some areas all picked out, but it will help to have a guy who has gone through it already.

I was in Georgia for 15 years and ALL of the Moose I saw were really TINY!

Sounds like a plan Steve -

The moose is on my bucket list.. I am quickly working toward my North American 12. I lack 4 (moose, goat, sheep and bison). I am heading out for the Bison in January. I am on the draw list for Desert Bighorn in AZ. This is the least expensive method to get one and it should take 3-5 years to actually be drawn which will give me time to save the pennies. I have a plan to go to Scoop Lake in NW Territories for Moose and Goat when the house is paid off. That is my "thank you" to me.

So go out and have fun. Even the Shiras is large by any standard. And good luck

Wow, lucky you. Around here you might go hunting and not make it back. I put in every few years for a moose tag, but have never been drawn. You are only allowed one a lifetime here in Idaho. Someday hopefully. Have shot deer, elk, bear, cougar, wolf, antelope, caribou, bison, pig, alligator all with a bow, but would rifle a moose if I had a chance. That and a bighorn someday are on my list.

Good luck to you!!!

I forgot to say, best of luck with the hunt and I'm happy for you :!: :D

and yes, there are no Meese in GA, but at least I didn't have to lotto for my 10 deer tags  (yes, I get cranky about some things...)

HAHA..Thanks! I WILL be successful or I will NEVER hear the end of it from anyone in town! Yeah, I don't know how they can make it more fair. Some guys have calculated that in some areas. because of preference points and the number of hunters entering the draw, there is no chance that they can draw a tag for a hundred years! I am quite thankful that I have my tag.And I have plenty of people who want to help. I am thinking of getting up to 12K and see what is around there.

Yeah, I think my brother got a deer license for Alabama and I think they can get one a day or something crazy like that!

Steve...

I did put in for Bison as well, but have not received results on that. I do have some friends who raise bison and I could go kill one of those I suppose, but it would not be the same.

I was thinking of taking my 45-120 out on my friend's ranch and just killing a cow from a 1,000 yds just because I can. It's not a bison, but it's tastes pretty close with A-1 sauce

I get what you're saying about trying to make it fair and all, but I missed the application deadline and was not allowed to hunt antelope on my own land a few years back. Since I only had 120 acres I didn't qualify as a "landowner" so I was just out of luck......... my own friggin land  .......I'll stop now. Don't want to ruin your thread Steve. :)
