Hello all,

My name is Brian and I am new to this forum. I bought plans for the Zip about two years ago and I am just now getting around to starting the build. I am not an experienced wood worker but I do have plenty of experience working with sheet metal and reading plans as an aircraft mechanic in Tampa, Florida. Some of the methods and terminology are new to me, but after reading through all the material I do feel a bit better about this build.

I am starting by building the frames from White Oak. As far as I can tell, the frames are constructed with epoxy and carriage bolts, joining the frame members with the gussets. The drawings show the carriage bolts on frames at #4 and #5 1/2, but the drawing for frame at #2 does not show carriage bolts. Are they used in the frame at #2? I wonder if it is that I am over analyzing the drawings?

Any help is appreciated,
Brian

By the way all the boats that I have seen on the Glen-L site look amazing! I hope to do the Zip justice in my build.

Brian, good to see another builder in the Tampa Bay area

There should be a fastening schedule in the written instructions that will shed light on what gets used where

If you use the optional frame joining method the bolts will not be needed. If you assemble the frames using the lap joint as shown on the plan sheets, place the bolts in the lap joint where edge distance is optimal (like riveting) while keeping in mind that you will be notching the area for the chines and shears.

Have fun with the build. It is a nice boat that can be personalized to your liking. Here is a link to my build:

upspirate,

Wow, Thanks for the quick response. My wife and I currently have a small fibreglass boat that we launch off of Dunedin Causway and we love running around Three Rooker Bar and Anclote Island.

I don't see a fastener schedule in my packet from Glen-L, and the only thing showing fastener locations appear to be the drawings. I will have to do some research, perhaps I misplaced the fastener schedule?

If you don't mind me asking, where did you buy the lumber for your build?

Thanks, Brian

The fastening schedule on my plans(TNT,Power-row skiff,Squirt,Tunnel Might,pee-Wee) are on the last page of the written instructions.....haven't seen the Zip Plans, but all the others have it there.

We boat & kayak in those areas too as well as others around the state

OOPs! forgot to answer the where question.

I got some of my Sapelle from Weiss hardwoods in largo, and some from a place in N.C. cause I was on a trip there.

Plywood I got from World panel, again in N.C. as I was on a trip there, but they have a place in Fla and are great to work with

Don't worry about being an experienced woodworker, I'm not either. I just consider myself handy and patient, and with all the help from the forum, my boat turned out better than hoped for.

If you ever make it to West Palm Beach, I would be happy to show you my Zip.

The best part about a manual screwdriver is not needing to remember if you left it in reverse.

Completion is but one step in the process and not one bit more important than the others.

Roberta,
I think that I will use the alternate method of assembling the frames, It seems like a better way to do it. Your build looks great! I hope to have some similar pictures up soon.
Thank You, Brian
