Yeah, the community looks great here. :D

I would love to build one myself sometime.. I love the look of the zip built by Robert Pinske on the photograph section of the zip page.
Kinda how I would want to build it, with the ability to walk between the two seating compartments.

For now I'm just reading alot of build threads and soaking up as much information as I can. Glen-L has some lovely designs.

No time like the present, Kurt!!!

Jeff, Once the prep work was done filling holes and sanding the bottom smooth, I taped and masked the area off where I would end the fiberglassing. A thin seal coat of resin was rolled on one late afternoon where the cloth would be set. The next morning the cloth was smoothed out over the bottom and the resin was applied using a 16" window squeegee. Once the cloth was wet out, I let it set up to the green stage. Then the cloth was trimmed along the tape line and another coat of resin was added. I continued to add coats about twice a day until I was satisfied that the cloth weave was buried deep enough into the resin to prevent sanding through the resin and into the cloth. The whole process was spread out over several days, but in reality, it only took several hours. Just needed time to let the resin set up between coats. I used System Three General Purpose resin with the slow hardener. Glen L Poxy Shield is also a fine product. I like the slow hardeners for this so I can work slower and not be rushed.

Thanks Mike!!

Well I just got done firing up the Zip's Merc 500 today. I was worried as I never fogged the motor last fall, but I had been working on the lower unit and doing other putzy things. She fired right up and purred like a kitten and roared like a lion. All the systems are now working properly and the lower unit looks fine.

I was using my aux tank for testing as I have replaced the original AL tank (that leaked) with a plastic Moeller tank. I need to get that filled up.

I finally got the tach and charging system working right. Using just a rectifier created too much voltage for my Odyssey 925 battery. When I switched to a 4 wire regulator, the voltage was OK but the tach was acting funky. I went with a new style 6 wire regulator with a dedicated tach lead and now I am regulating and registering correctly. Hope to hit the water next weekend. I still need to add those Lenco trim tabs, but that will wait til later this summer.

Roberta
Is the Merc 500 a 50hp motor. If so how does it work on your boat as far as speed.
And why do you think you needLenco trim tabs.
Just wondering.
My zip is at a stand still. We went to our summer home the frist of April and had thing left from last erar to finish. Hope to bring my zip and work on it this summer.

The Merc 500 is 50 hp and works great. I get about 34 mph at WOT at about 5400 rpm. It has an 11"-13 pitch two blade aluminum prop. The reason I'm thinking about the Lenco trim tabs is I have no power trim on this motor and they will help smooth out higher speeds and help planing out when carrying passengers in the rear seat. Above 30 mph I get a little porpoising when in chop because the bow rides a little too high. The trim tabs should help get the bow down to a better planing attitude. Without power trim I can't make adjustments to compensate for varying weight and balance loads while under way. With the tabs I will be able to set the motor to the best tilt angle and still be able to trim the boat for the loads and conditions for the best ride.

Welcome to the world of 1950's and 60s boating. My first boat when I was in high school had a manual start 1955 Evinrude 25. It took both hands and a firm footing in the boat for me to pull the cord. Power trim? What's that?

Just progress moving us along. We all love the nostalgia of the past but there are many things we care not to relive. It's nice to have both!!

Got the Zip out for the first time this year! The new fuel tank worked fine as did the new voltage regulator. My voltage is now fixed at about 13.5 V which is perfect for the Odyssey PC925 battery. The tach is now registering properly since the new regulator has a dedicated tach wire. The newly rebuilt lower unit also seems to be just fine. No leaks and shifts like it should. All set for G6!!!!!!!
