 Post subject: Stringer Material
PostPosted: Thu May 06, 2004 1:04 pm
I need to replace some rotted wood stringers in my 19ft. outboard boat. The hull is fiberglass, but the stringers under the floor are fiberglass covered wood. The ones I need to replace are 1 inch wide by 6 inches high and 82 inches in length. They are plywood. Does anyone know of a composite that can be substituted for the wood?

I dont know the name of it, but it does exist. I have seen it, grey colored. I suggest searching the same suppliers as the lightweight foam core materiel.

Use standard southern yellow pine 2x8's. Which are 1&1/2inch thick by 7&1/4inch wide, rip it to width and if need to, then run it through a planer. Most lumberyards can do this for a fee if you do not have a planer. But you can probably leave them at 1&1/2in. thick. This is very standard repair that is done by boatyards to fiberglass boats that have rotten stringers. Cheap, easy and unbelievably durable. There will probably be a slight angle cut on the bottom edge.
