Been working on rear deck and the seat design. The beam came out nice. The cutout is to allow the tank to be slid out for service and to access the rudder gland and tiller, steering etc. I am not going with the plan for the aft deck as it has a very "square" looking step up to get the fuel tank in which I don't like. I will be going with a curved sloped rear deck and get a tank custom made to fit. It'll mean some fancy fitting to integrate the top and sides, but I am up for a challenge or I wouldn't be here. Yet to decide on the top layer finish, either 1" wide pieces or the normal 3" with narrow light coloured strips in between. 3" strips might be difficult with the curve but we will see.

The seat base and back are 5/8" marine ply. Dimensions pretty much as per plans but angle to suit my preference after sitting on it. I had to think hard on how it all sits. I assume that the back cushion will sit on top of the bottom cushion. Have to find a friendly upholsterer to get advice before finalising. I have to get crafty to make sure bottom and back are removable for access, maybe some stainless steel brackets with nice knurled screws on the rear deck to hold the back in place, with pegs at the bottom somewhere. The bottom is a little easier to secure, but I also want to allow room underneath to make storage pockets for fire extinguisher, safety equipment etc.

I am tempted to make the back come up higher than the beam, but not sure then how to cover the upholstery fixings and make it look nice. Maybe another bit of steamed timber....
I am going with Teleflex rotary steering, cable works out to almost exactly 3 metres long.

Looking great Glenn. On the steering, you may want to consider running a longer cable behind the dash to the opposite side of the boat and then aft to the tiller. I found that running it along the same side, even with the short Teleflex cable, was very difficult and almost didn't make the bends !! Keep in mind that I have maybe an extra 3 to 6 inches on the front-to-back run due to the stretch, and it was still a bit too long. Trisailor ran his across and back with no problems. Maybe he will chime in here. My aft deck plywood took a little kerfing to get the bends. I used 6mm Okume, and kerfed in about 2mm, every half inch. I then doubled the plywood, and it seems plenty strong. I think you are on the right track with the seat being slightly higher. I will be putting a mahogany strip across the deck, attached to the deck planking. This strip will extend forward past the plywood seat back about 3/4", and the upholsterd top of the seat will go under the mahogany. I am not quite there yet, but when I am, I will post a picture. Keep up the nice work......Neel

Thanks Neel. I sent the cable measurement off today so hopefully they will come back to me with options. I specified 3 metres maximum, measured it with coax antenna cable with nice rounded bends 3 times got between 2.8M and 3.1M . I'll have to check on the minimum radius for Teleflex cable I guess.
I was planning on doing the aft deck the same as the side decks with 5/8" x 1" stock, but the look may be wrong. I'll have to mock something up and see what it looks like.

Cheers,
Glenn.

Neel had it correct. My wheel is on the starboard side and the tiller feed is to port. Seems to work well.

I have a video of the run if anybody really wants to see it:

http://youtu.be/cCdoOqIKO8U

First one she wouldn't respond to throttle (Dang computers!). Sorry for the poor video and light in the shed but it is the best we could do on the day. It was raining and overcast and the light inside the shed is not conducive to video photography.

Yeah this one really had no excuses... (MEFI 5 computer) the thing even starts itself. You hit the button and it controls the starter not you. Supposed to be 20% more fuel efficient than the standard SMB. God help me if it ever has issues though, have to hook up a diagnostic computer to see what it wants...

Teleflex Safe-T QC kit. Mounted a block in a very odd place for the steering cable transom mount clamp. Seems to be good. This is the cheaper Teleflex transom mount kit. It needs to be mounted 14" from the rudder centre, the right way around. A little too much slop in it for my model engineer brain but it should be ok for its purpose.

For those who haven't seen the setup before, the cable comes with nothing on the end except the big nut. The aluminium tube shown comes with the transom mount kit along with the fancy bracket/clamp and the wrap around attachment and stepped bolts and nuts.
The cable itself is about 5/8" thick so really cannot go around corners easily.

I have been working away on the finishing boards. They are a very slow part of the build, I can see why others have opted to cover this area in a different way - 11 boards each side to fit and glue. Each one literally has to be pulled in with clamps and hand fitted due the the ever changing angles, which means multiple fittings to get them as close as possible to a perfect fit. I have to trim them to an angle that leaves no gap, but if I go too far I will change the width of the piece and it will look bad. If they end up good enough I want them finished bright, but in the end that is a big ask and I may have to paint them anyway. The first one is very difficult as it blends in the sides and barrel back curve and the join and blending curve and angle are very visible on the side of the barrel back curve. After gluing it in place I went right around the outside with the hand plane forming a vertical flat 3/8" high to which I hope to attach the stainless steel "D Shaped" rub rail. I spent some time making this flat and even, and the outside a fair curve. Once I was as happy as I could be, I used my new trim router with its fence guide to make the inside an exact width from the outside edge so the overall plank width looks even when finished. It was still very tricky and more than once the router bit in and left a less than perfect curve which I had to hand finish to look good.

I was hoping to have two on each side and two more scarfed and glued ready to fit, but things just didn't go my way. I did get the tractor fixed, neighbours hydraulic pipe welded, other neighbours electrical soldering done, 3 walks a day for the dog, and a Saturday night dinner party of sorts with good wine and good company. Diet went out the window...
