I am getting close to fibreglassing my tahoe, and after reading a few earlier posts about spray rails, have decided to add them while the boat is still
inverted and after it is glassed, and before the bottom paint goes on. So my question is, what length of fasteners should be used for this? seems to me that if I use screws they will just be going into the end grain of the bottom plywood that was put on, is this right or am I missing something?
Also, do I glass the transom now, or after I flip the boat? If before it is turned, how do I get the glass and the epoxy to stay in place? (because the transom is sloped in and down) won't gravity begin to work and pull the glass away from the wood?your comments please, thanks.

Bill

Glass the transom first, then the sides and then the bottom. Apply epoxy to the transom then wait till is just slightly tacky. The glass will now stick to the inverted surface.

Your sprayrail should be deep enough that you screw into the chine log.

I mounted my spray rails after I glassed the hull, right flush with the chine bottoms. I overlapped my edges when I glassed my bottom/sides and for that you have to round over the corners to a 1/4" radius (about the same as a pencil). When I epoxied my solid lumber spray rails on afterwards, I used thickened epoxy to fill the rounded chine corner at the same time, then sanded it all flush to the same angle as my bottom hull to create a nice edge.

I used silicone bronze screws that I countersunk & filled over. My spray rails are painted over the same as my hull.

OK thanks for the quick returns, I think I've got it. Bill, so if I glass the transom first, I'll roll the glass around the sides and bottom by a couple of inches, and wet all that out. But when I size the glass for the sides should I just bring it just to the back edge of the transom, or roll it around the transom which surface will be easier to feather that lump of glass that will form out of?

I wrapped the transom glass around to the edge of the side boards of the transom and trimmed at that edge. Light sanding will feather the edge. The sides wrap around the end also. Each place two glass panels meet I wrapped over the bend about an inch and a half (width of my metal yard stick). Every edge has 2 layers about 3" lap.

Copy that, thanks again. Now its back out to the shop for some more hand sanding with the long board , 33 degrees here, about 96 for you guys south of the boarder, so I don't last too long at one go.I'll have to push myself into a night shift for the glassing. thanks

Night shift is fine. It's best glass while the temp. is coming down, fewer bubbles from air coming out of the wood.

Gosh, in this summers heat, it don't matter what kind of hardener I use, I still got 5-minute epoxy, that is, if it doesn't boil and start smoking!!!!
Night shift is fine except for the mosquitos.
