HI my name is eben i'm 18 i live in ukiah ca i built a zip started when i was 13 it has a 65 hp merc on it very fast haha. have any one else ran a big engine like this?? ill post more pics and vids later tonight. here a pic like 3 years ago the first day out then it was parked in the garage for 2 years until i moved out and now I have a 65 hp merc

Its great to see your finished boat. I looked at your pictures on the builders gallery section of this site many times for reference when building. There were never any pictures of the finished boat and I always wondered if you finished and what it looked like. Glad to see you and your boat here on the forum and doing well.

There has been at least 2 other Zips with 65hp on them. Total overkill in my mind but its your boat. The weight of it and the torque on the transom would be my worries. It has been done before though.

yea it is overkill im gona see if some wants to trade me my 65 for a 40 but not having any luck haha. ive got to half throttle and it gets up in the low 40s havent gone any faster it starts bouncing

Very nice job you did on your Zip, but I'm with vupilot--65 HP on a Zip seems like overkill. I wouldn't be too concerned about the weight of the motor, but I don't think I'd want to run much faster than 40--45 MPH in a Zip. We've seen low 30s with our tired 40-horse Merc Mark 55, and will upgrade the motor with a 50-horse Merc 500 powerhead, and I think we'll be happy with the performance.

yea its way overkill im gona remove the engine im allways worried about the back riping off haha. any one wanna trade a 65 merc for 40 or 35??

i have a 1957 merc 40 hp i would be willing to trade. It runs great, no electric start. If your interested.

Where are the pics with this so called 650? As long as your transom is built tough there isn't any issue, but if it's built per plans an spec u might deep six her, all depends on how u constructed the boat. Just saw Schuberts boat at Constantine and has an 850 runs beautiful.

It does not look like you built in a motorwell, which will greatly strengthen the transom connection to the boat. Right now it looks like you only have the shears, chines, keel, knee, and carlings reinforcing the the transom. I would consider adding some bracing and a motorwell when running that much power. Under normal conditions this might be fine, but get in some real chop, put that transom under a real load and you may be using your PFDs.

Travis, was it a 4 or a 6 cylinder engine? Last year he had a red Mark 75 with a very short tower and a speedmaster lower unit but the motor was not working correctly so I never got to see his boat run. John Schuberts Zip is very beautiful and it has a very strong and well braced transom. The boat also has a 15 degree bottom and a flat area in front of the transom that I think let's undistributed water can get to the prop ( this is very similar to Bob Walwork's Raveau's).

I would like to see Glen L create a Zip II with a Vee Bottom, then we could have the best of both worlds a period boat that gives a smooth ride is rough water. How about it Gayle you created a new inboard design the Torpedo, why not Zip II with a Vee Bottom?

Ok, back to the reason for this post a Zip with a well braced transom should be able to hold a 4 cylinder Mercury 65 hp with no problem. Two problem occur with a flimsy transom, first the motor over time will loosen up ever board that attaches to the transom and second the motor will pivot on the the transom maybe only 1/16 to1/8 inch but this will cause the boat to porpoise and once porpoising starts it just gets worse. I know this from experience the boat I built was the was the worst handling thing I had ever driven, until a friend said brace the transom. Once the transom was braced and I mean braced (maybe over kill) the boat handles great.

On Johns Zip he has a 76' 4 cylinder 850xs w/ low water pick up. The step that was originally built into the bottow at the transom has been filled in back to the conventional v bottom//flat, but the transom is set at 10 degrees and not 5. It runs 6500 rpm's at 46 I was told and he is still experimenting with props. He had some problems with the 75 and transom issues before now it's all worked out.

We have a friend that is very close to John and we were talking about his Zip this past weekend. He did remove the step he had built into the boat and it does perform much better. He has also reinforced the transom from an earlier problem. Should be a great boat now.

Hi everyone. I am still running a 1962 Merc 850 on my highly modified zip. The boat is in it's four year and runs great. I am running a 19 inch prop. The boat runs very smooth and flat. I am in the process of building another highly modified Zip with 7 frames ,3 knees ,1/4 inch sheet of alum in tramson etc .will start of with 1963 Merc 1000. Some zips should only run a 40 HP ? It depends on construction materials and design.
